Inheritance in Hebrews 9

Gal 3: Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ. 17 What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. 18 For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.

Summary 1.Every element in the Tabernacle represented an aspect of God’s holiness and faithfulness as Israel’s righteous Judge and loving Redeemer. 2.The Tabernacle was set-up as a protocol- driven pathway to the presence of God in fellowship and harmony. 3.However it was only a depiction, an object lesson of this protocol system.

vv6-7: Two Parts, Two Kinds of Ministry 6: Priests functioning in outer tabernacle performing Divine worship 6 Τούτων δὲ οὕτως κατεσκευασμένων, εἰς μὲν τὴν πρώτην σκηνὴν διὰ παντὸς εἰσίασιν οἱ ἱερεῖς, τὰς λατρείας ἐπιτελοῦντες· Now with these things having been prepared in this manner—perf pass participle from kataskeuazw : to prepare according to a standard or pattern—Moses’ pattern in Exodus—into, on the one hand the first tent continually/all the time (dia + gen is temporal use to mean “continually” or “always”) they are entering, the priests, in order to (purpose pres act ptcple) fully execute the service of worship;

v7: The High Priest’s yearly trip to the Holy of Holies 7 εἰς δὲ τὴν δευτέραν ἅπαξ τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ μόνος ὁ ἀρχιερεύς, οὐ χωρὶς αἵματος, ὃ προσφέρει ὑπὲρ ἑαυτοῦ καὶ τῶν τοῦ λαοῦ ἀγνοημάτων· But on the other hand, into the second (ei~ + accus of deutero~) once (adv) per year (gen—wallace says after certain words), only the high priest (attributive adjective), not without blood (all these adverbs), which he offers as a substitute (uJper + gen) for himself and for the ignorance of the people

vv8-10: The Spirit’s Interpretation 8 τοῦτο δηλοῦντος τοῦ πνεύματος τοῦ ἁγίου, Genitive absolute w/ pres act ptcple dhlow (to reveal new data---This is what the Spirit is saying through the writer to the Hebrews): This is what the Holy Spirit is revealing: μήπω πεφανερ ῶ σθαι τ ὴ ν τ ῶ ν ἁ γίων ὁ δόν, ἔ τι τ ῆ ς πρώτης σκην ῆ ς ἐ χούσης στάσιν· Not yet has it been revealed (fanerow perf pass ptcple), the road/way of the Holy, while the first tent is standing

v9 Conscience 9 ἥ τις παραβολ ὴ ε ἰ ς τ ὸ ν καιρ ὸ ν τ ὸ ν ἐ νεστηκότα, καθ ʼ ὃ ν δ ῶ ρά τε κα ὶ θυσίαι προσφέρονται, μ ὴ δυνάμεναι κατ ὰ συνείδησιν τελει ῶ σαι τ ὸ ν λατρεύοντα, which is a PARABLE unto the time which is at hand/present, with reference to which (time, neuter accus), both gifts and offerings are now being offered (pres act ind prosferw ) which are not able (pres act participle, dunamew ) to perfect (teleiow, make complete, aor act infin) the worshipers with respect to CONSCIENCE ( suneideisi~, “to know with”)

v10 10 μόνον ἐ π ὶ βρώμασιν κα ὶ πόμασιν κα ὶ διαφόροις βαπτισμο ῖ ς κα ὶ δικαιώμασιν σαρκός, μέχρι καιρο ῦ διορθώσεως ἐ πικείμενα. But rather Only on the basis of food and drink and various baptisms and fleshly commandments being imposed, until a time of reformation (hapax: gen from diorqwsi~, BDAG: Process leading to a new order).

v11: BUT CHRIST….ENTERED 11 Χριστὸς δὲ subject: But CHRIST παραγενόμενος ἀρχιερεὺς τῶν μελλόντων ἀγαθῶν, after He arrived/appeared (aor mid ptcple paraginomai) the High Priest of the about-to-be good things διὰ τῆς μείζονος καὶ τελειοτέρας σκηνῆς, through the greater and more perfect tent ο ὐ χειροποιήτου, not made with hands το ῦ τ ʼ ἔ στιν, ο ὐ ταύτης τ ῆ ς κτίσεως, that is, not of this Creation

v12: Once for All Time 12 οὐδὲ δι ʼ αἵματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων, and not through/by means of the blood of goats and calves διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος but through His own blood εἰσῆλθεν ἐφάπαξ εἰς τὰ ἅγια, He entered once for all time into the Holy Place αἰωνίαν λύτρωσιν εὑράμενος. After obtaining (aor act ptciple euJriskw) eternal redemption

vv13-14: Conditional Question 13 Εἰ γὰρ τὸ αἷμα ταύρων καὶ τράγων, καὶ σποδὸς δαμάλεως ῥαντίζουσα τοὺς κεκοινωμένους, ἁγιάζει πρὸς τὴν τῆς σαρκὸς καθαρότητα, For if the blood of bulls and calves, and the ashes of the heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify ( aJgiazw, hagiazw) for the cleansing ( kaqarwth~ ) of the flesh, 14 πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ αἷμα τοῦ χριστοῦ, ὃς διὰ πνεύματος αἰωνίου ἑαυτὸν προσήνεγκεν ἄμωμον τῷ θεῷ, καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησιν ὑμῶν ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων, εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν θεῷ ζῶντι; How much more the blood of Christ, which through the Eternal Spirit Himself offered without blemish to God, cleanse (future act ind kaqarizw ) your conscience ( suneidhsi~ ) from dead works into the service (priestly-- latreuw )of the living God?

v15: Now Inheritance 15 Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο διαθήκης καινῆς μεσίτης ἐστίν, ὅπως, θανάτου γενομένου εἰς ἀπολύτρωσιν τῶν ἐπὶ τῇ πρώτῃ διαθήκῃ παραβάσεων, τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν λάβωσιν οἱ κεκλημένοι τῆς αἰωνίου κληρονομίας. And by means of this, of the New Covenant He is a Mediator, so that because death occurred unto the redemption of the transgressions committed under the First Covenant, the Promise they might receive ( lambanw, aor act subj), those who have been called, of the eternal Inheritance.
