SECOND JOHN

Living According to the Truth

SECOND JOHN “truth” (five times) “love” (four times) “commandment” (four times) “walk” (three times) “teaching” (three times) “children” (three times)

Living According to the Truth Prioritize truth AND love

2 John 1-3 (NET Bible) 1 From the elder, to an elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth (and not I alone, but also all those who know the truth), 2 because of the truth that resides in us and will be with us forever. 3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

Living According to the Truth Two key words drive this letter: love (agapē) and truth (alētheia).

Living According to the Truth Jesus Christ is the Father’s Son. He is both Messiah and Son of God incarnate.

Living According to the Truth “If love would appeal to their hearts, then truth would appeal to their minds. The neglect of this epistle throughout the history of the church has been unfortunate because no letter more beautifully balances the twin Christian graces of ‘love’ and ‘truth.’” –NAC

Living According to the Truth Prioritize truth AND love

Living According to the Truth Prioritize truth AND love Don’t contain love for others

2 John 4-6 (NET Bible) 4 I rejoiced greatly because I have found some of your children living according to the truth, just as the Father commanded us. 5 But now I ask you, lady (not as if I were writing a new commandment to you, but the one we have had from the beginning), that we love one another. 6 (Now this is love: that we walk according to his commandments.) This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning; thus you should walk in it.

Living According to the Truth “Love for one another is what the Father required, the Son manifested, and the Spirit makes available through life in him.” –Frank E. Gaebelein

Living According to the Truth “Belief may be feigned and confession only of the lips, but love is harder to counterfeit.” –Frank E. Gaebelein

Living According to the Truth Hospitality

Living According to the Truth Hospitality Meeting the needs of others with the best of your earthly possessions.

Living According to the Truth Prioritize truth AND love Don’t contain love for others

Living According to the Truth Prioritize truth AND love Don’t contain love for others Don’t compromise truth for others

2 John 7-13 (NET Bible) 7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, people who do not confess Jesus as Christ coming in the flesh. This person is the deceiver and the antichrist! 8 Watch out, so that you do not lose the things we have worked for, but receive a full reward. 9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not remain in the teaching of Christ does not have God. The one who remains in this teaching has both the Father and the Son.

2 John 7-13 (NET Bible) 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house and do not give him any greeting, 11 because the person who gives him a greeting shares in his evil deeds. 12 Though I have many other things to write to you, I do not want to do so with paper and ink, but I hope to come visit you and speak face to face, so that our joy may be complete. 13 The children of your elect sister greet you.

Living According to the Truth V. 8 “Watch out” V. 10 “Do not receive him”

Living According to the Truth “There is always a seductiveness to false teaching that can lure one into a stupor if he is not careful.” –NAC

Living According to the Truth Hospitality It was a moral obligation to host guests in your home. John, the “Apostle of love,” is the one instructing them to withhold this moral obligation.

Living According to the Truth “To maintain a healthy and growing community the church must exhibit a fidelity to the truth that knows no compromise, and they must love one another in a way that knows no boundaries.” –NAC

Living According to the Truth Our goal: truth that knows no compromise love that knows no boundaries
