1990 – 2012 Η ιστορία του κινηματογράφου

Δεκαετία ‘90: Νέα ειδικά εφέ, ανεξάρτητες ταινίες και ταινίες κινουμένων σχεδίων Στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1990 είδαν εμπορική ανάπτυξη ταινίες του ανεξάρτητου κινηματογράφου στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Αν και ο κινηματογράφος όλο και περισσότερο κυριαρχείται από ειδικά εφέ (κινηματογραφικές ταινίες όπως Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Jurassic Park (1993) και ο Τιτανικός (1997), ανεξάρτητες ταινίες όπως το Sex, Lies and videotapes (1989) του Στίβεν Σόντερμπεργκ και το Reservoir Dogs (1992) του Κουέντιν Ταραντίνο είχαν σημαντική εμπορική επιτυχία τόσο στον κινηματογράφο όσο και σε βίντεο στο σπίτι. Σημαντικοί αμερικανοί κινηματογραφιστές άρχισαν να δημιουργούν τις δικές τους "ανεξάρτητες" εταιρείες παραγωγής για τη χρηματοδότηση και την παραγωγή μη mainstream ταινιών. Ταινίες κινουμένων σχεδίων που αποσκοπούν στην οικογένεια σαν κοινό,ανέκτησαν επίσης τη δημοτικότητα τους (Η πεντάμορφη και το Τέρας -1991, Aladdin -1992, The Lion King -1994). Κατά τη διάρκεια του 1995, η πρώτη μεγάλου μήκους υπολογιστή ταινία κινουμένων σχεδίων, το Toy Story, παρήχθη από την Pixar Animation Studios και κυκλοφόρησε από την Disney.

Δεκαετία 2000 Το ντοκιμαντέρ αυξήθηκε ως εμπορικό είδος ίσως για πρώτη φορά, με την επιτυχία των ταινιών όπως March of the Penguins και Fahrenheit 9/11. Ένα νέο είδος δημιουργήθηκε με τον Martin Kunert και Eric Manes, όταν 150 φθηνές κάμερες DV διανεμήθηκαν σε ολόκληρο το Ιράκ και τη μετατροπή των απλών ανθρώπων σε συνεργάτες κινηματογραφιστές. Η επιτυχία του Gladiator οδηγήσει σε μια αναβίωση του ενδιαφέροντος για επικό κινηματογράφο, και του Moulin Rouge ανανέωσε το ενδιαφέρον για μουσική κινηματογράφου. Έχει υπάρξει μια αυξανόμενη παγκοσμιοποίηση του κινηματογράφου κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της δεκαετίας, με ξενόγλωσσες ταινίες να κερδίζουν δημοτικότητα στις αγγλόφωνες αγορές. Πρόσφατα έχει υπάρξει μια αναβίωση στη δημοτικότητα 3D ταινιών. Μερικές από αυτές είναι: Spy Kids 3D: Game Over (2003), Aliens of the Deep IMAX (2005), και Οι περιπέτειες του Sharkboy και Lavagirl σε 3-D (2005). Η 3D ταινία Avatar του Τζέιμς Κάμερον έγινε η υψηλότερη ταινία συνολικής είσπραξης όλων των εποχών και οι 3D ταινίες έχουν αποκτήσει αυξανόμενη δημοτικότητα.

Oscars καλύτερων ταινιών ( ) Τα βραβεία της Αμερικανικής Ακαδημίας Κινηματογράφου, γνωστά ως Όσκαρ, είναι ένα σύνολο από βραβεία που απονέμονται κάθε χρόνο για τα καλύτερα κινηματογραφικά επιτεύγματα. Διοργανώνονται και εποπτεύονται από την Ακαδημία Κινηματογραφικών Τεχνών και Επιστημών και δίνονται κάθε χρόνο κατά τη διάρκεια επίσημης τελετής. Τα βραβεία δόθηκαν για πρώτη φορά το 1929 σε μια τελετή που δημιουργήθηκε στο ξενοδοχείο Roosevelt στο Χόλιγουντ.
