THE AGIASMA FEBRUARY MARCH 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 05 THE AGIASMA FEBRUARY MARCH 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 05 Memorial Services in the Orthodox Church We know from the Bible that the souls of the departed in Christ, after they are freed from the body, live in another world, beyond this world. However, where that world is, how the souls exist in it, what language they speak, etc. we do not know, although we are so curious for such knowledge. It has not pleased God to reveal to us the secrets of the next world, and hence, His "holy men", the writers of the Bible (2 Pet 1:21), would not write by their own imagination to satisfy human curiosity; therefore, their writings bear the seriousness of Gods inspiration, and thereby absolute trustworthiness. The life of the souls in the other world is described in the Bible in parables and characters, the descriptions of which are accepted by our Church as standing for realities (Read Luke 16:22; Matt 22:13; I Cor 13:12; Heb 12:22; Rev 2:10, 3:5, 21:8). The souls of the departed, from their death to their Final Judgment, live in an intermediate state. In other words, if they had lived according to the will of God, their souls foretaste the Joys of Paradise; if they had deliberately set themselves against the will of God and their lives ended in sin and unrepentance, their souls foretaste the misery of Hell. Their Joy or punishment shall have its perfect realisation at the Last Judgement after the resurrection of the dead, when their nature will be restored to its integrity (John 5:29). In this intermediate state, the disembodied souls retain a conscious existence. The term "sleep" used instead of death in the Orthodox Church, applies to the body rather than to the soul. We may rather expect a quickening of the spiritual powers of memory, thought and affection and an intensifying of their operations, when released from the burden of the flesh (Luke 16:22-25). The departed have not forgotten us, nor are they indifferent to us. Those who have pleased God with their holy life, the Saints, pray for us; the rest need our prayers; it is "a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin" (11 Maccabees 12:45). The prayers for the departed are as ancient as the Christian Church. Prayers for a merciful Judgment at the Last Day, have the sanction of the early Liturgies, of which the first is that of St James, the Lord's brother. Although we read in the Bible that there are sins for which "there is no forgiveness, either in this world or in the world to come" (Matt 12:32), it is our brotherly duty and obligation to pray for the forgiveness of the departed. Our prayers can help those who repented even shortly before their death; not those who committed suicide (or euthanasia) or those who of their own free will rejected the love of God and ignored His Justice to the end of their life. However, as we do not know what is going on in one's mind, while living or dying, we must pray for the souls of all departed. Therefore, our Church offers prayers for them at their funerals and burials and over their graves, but especially the Church offers the Bloodless Sacrifice for the repose of the departed. For the same purpose, we perform the Memorial Services, on the third, ninth and the 40th day, as well as on the anniversary of one's death and on the Saturday dedicated to the souls (Psychosavata), preparing boiled wheat (kollyva) for these Services. The kollyva represent the souls of the departed (John 12:24). At the end of the Liturgy, special hymns and prayers are offered over them for the repose of the departed. These memorial services cannot be replaced by donations or similar Pious acts. Our prayers for the souls of the departed are expressions of the brotherly unity of the living and the dead, aiming to influence the All-Merciful God to show mercy to them. Such services are held as an act of love and remembrance towards the departed members of the Church. Soul Saturdays are a series of Saturdays set aside in the liturgical calendar of Eastern and Greek Orthodox Catholic Churches for the remembrance of those who have died. These days occur on designated Saturdays before and during the seasons of Lent and Easter: the first two are observed on the two Saturdays before Lent begins, the third Saturday of Souls coincides with the first Saturday of Lent, and the fourth Soul Saturday takes place on the Saturday before Pentecost, the close of the Easter season. Saturday holds special significance in the religious calendar as the day on which the crucified Jesus lay dead in the tomb before his resurrection. On each Soul Saturday a special service is held where prayers are offered in memory of those who have died and a list of the names of the dead is recited. Participants attending the services prepare kollyva, a dish made of sweetened, boiled wheat kernels, raisins, almonds, and pomegranate seeds that is traditionally associated with funerals and memorial services. In addition to attending religious services, participants often visit the graves of departed family members on Soul Saturdays, to clean and decorate the burial sites. It is my hope that many of you will participate this year in this wonderful tradiotn, which not only it builds our faith in the Lord and His resurrection, but also it may be that our “own prayer” may save a soul. Faithful are encouraged to take the icon home for a week for blessing. All interest are to call Fr. Sarantis for arrangements. HOSPITAL VISITATION Nowadays, due to the new HIPAA laws, it is difficult for Fr. Sarantis to obtain and to visit parishioners in the near by hospitals. These laws do not allow the hospital to release any information, or even the name of the patient, unless you are their doctor or family member. Nonetheless, Fr. Sarantis continues his regular hospital visits to Mercy Memorial Hospital, South Shore, which still allows him to see the names of Greek Orthodox patients in its computer, but in other are hospitals he is not able to get these names. In order for Fr. Sarantis to be more effective in visiting you or your loved ones in the hospital, or at home, you must please inform him by contacting the church. He will not know to visit you unless he knows that you are in the hospital. When you register at the local hospitals please make sure you inform the admissions office that you wish to be listed as a member of Saint Markella and as a Greek Orthodox Christian. Η εκκλησία μας καθόρισε το Σάββατο ως ημέρα μνήμης των Αγίων Μαρτύρων και  όλων των κεκοιμημένων. Το  Σάββατο  είναι  ημέρα πένθιμη, διότι κατ’ αυτήν επιβλήθηκε ο θάνατος από το Θεό στον παραβάτη άνθρωπο. Τα επίσημα ψυχοσάββατα είναι δύο: Το Σάββατο πριν την Κυριακή της Απόκρεω και το Σάββατο πριν την Κυριακή της Πεντηκοστής. Αλλά και ορισμένα άλλα Σάββατα του έτους επικράτησε να ονομάζονται ψυχοσάββατα σύμφωνα με τις τοπικές παραδόσεις. Το μνημόσυνο τελείται πάντοτε με Θ. Λειτουργία. Η Θεία Λειτουργία είναι το κύριο μέρος του Μνημόσυνου, για αυτό πρέπει να προσφέρουμε δύο λειτουργίες, (πρώτα) λάδι, θυμίαμα, κρασί και κόλλυβα. Η χρήση κολλύβου είναι έθιμο που άρχισε τον 4ο αιώνα και έχει ένα βαθύτατο δογματικό συμβολισμό. Συμβολίζει την ανάσταση των σωμάτων. Το Μνημόσυνο τελείται στις 3 ημέρες, στις 9, στις 40, στο εξάμηνο και στο χρόνο. Τα τριήμερα είναι σε ανάμνηση της Αγίας Τριάδας και της τριημέρου  ταφής του  Κυρίου.  Τα 9μέρα για να θυμηθούμε τα 9 τάγματα των αγγέλων.  Τα 40  σε  ανάμνηση  της Αναλήψεως του Χριστού μας, στο εξάμηνο και στο χρόνο, για να γίνει φανερό πως ο νεκρός μας ζει σαν ψυχή. Μνημόσυνα δεν τελούνται: α) Από το Σάββατο του Λαζάρου μέχρι και την Κυριακή του Θωμά (στο χρονικό διάστημα αυτό γίνονται μόνο τρισάγια χωρίς κόλλυβο), β) Σε όλες τις Δεσποτικές εορτές, γ) Την Κυριακή της Πεντηκοστής και δ) Την εορτή της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου. Την ημέρα της τελέσεως του μνημόσυνου είναι καλό τα μέλη της οικογένειας να κοινωνήσουν, αφού προηγουμένως ετοιμαστούν κατάλληλα. Το μνημόσυνο τελείται γιατί ωφελεί τους κοιμηθέντες όπως παρατηρούν: Ο Άγιος Κύριλλος Ιεροσολύμων και ο Ιερός Χρυσόστομος. Μέχρι ποιό όμως βαθμό φθάνει αυτή η ωφέλεια δεν μπορούμε να το ξέρουμε. Μέτρο της αγάπης μας στον άνθρωπο μας που κοιμήθηκε εν Κυρίω είναι το Μνημόσυνο Τὸ Ψυχοσάββατο πρὶν ἀπὸ τὴν Κυριακὴ τῆς Ἀπόκρεω ἔχει τὸ ἑξῆς νόημα: Ἡ ἑπομένη ἡμέρα εἶναι ἀφιερωμένη στὴ Δευτέρα Παρουσία τοῦ Κυρίου. Ἐκείνη τὴ φοβερὴ ἡμέρα κατὰ τὴν ὁποία ὅλοι θὰ σταθοῦμε μπροστὰ στὸ θρόνο τοῦ μεγάλου Κριτοῦ. Γιὰ τὸ λόγο αὐτὸ μὲ τὸ μνημόσυνο τῶν κεκοιμημένων ζητοῦμε ἀπὸ τὸν Κύριο νὰ γίνει ἵλεως καὶ νὰ δείξει τὴν συμπάθεια καὶ τὴν μακροθυμία του, ὄχι μόνο σὲ μᾶς ἀλλὰ καὶ στοὺς προαπελθόντας ἀδελφούς, καὶ ὅλους μαζὶ νὰ μᾶς κατατάξει στὴν Ἐπουράνια Βασιλεία Του. Μὲ τὸ δεύτερο Ψυχοσάββατο διατρανώνεται ἡ πίστη μας γιὰ τὴν καθολικότητα τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, τῆς ὁποίας τὴν ἵδρυση καὶ τὰ γενέθλια (ἐπὶ γῆς) γιορτάζουμε κατὰ τὴν Πεντηκοστή. Μέσα στὴ μία Ἐκκλησία περιλαμβάνεται ἡ στρατευομένη ἐδῶ στὴ γῆ καὶ ἡ θριαμβεύουσα στοὺς οὐρανούς. Ὁ λόγος ποὺ τὰ καθιέρωσε ἡ Ἐκκλησία μας, παρ᾿ ὅτι κάθε Σάββατο εἶναι ἀφιερωμένο στοὺς κεκοιμημένους, εἶναι ὁ ἑξῆς: Ἐπειδὴ πολλοὶ κατὰ καιροὺς ἀπέθαναν μικροὶ σὲ ἡλικία ἢ στην ξενιτιὰ ἢ στὴν θάλασσα ἢ στὰ ὄρη καὶ τοὺς κρημνοὺς ἢ καὶ μερικοί, λόγῳ πτωχείας, δὲν ἀξιώθηκαν τῶν διατεταγμένων μνημοσύνων, «οἱ θεῖοι Πατέρες φιλανθρώπως κινούμενοι ἐθέσπισαν τὸ μνημόσυνον αὐτὸ ὑπὲρ πάντων τῶν ἀπ᾿ αἰῶνος εὐσεβῶς τελευτησάντων Χριστιανῶν». Συγχρόνως δέ, ἐνθυμούμενοι καὶ ἐμεῖς τὸν θάνατο, «διεγειρόμεθα πρὸς μετάνοιαν». Πολλοὶ συμβολισμοὶ τῶν ἐπιμέρους μνημοσύνων ἀναφέρονται ἀπὸ τοὺς πατέρες. Οἱ κυριότεροι εἶναι οἱ ἑξῆς: Τὰ «τριήμερα» συμβολίζουν τὴν Ἀνάσταση τοῦ Κυρίου μετὰ τὴν τριήμερη παραμονή Του στὸν τάφο καὶ τελοῦνται μὲ τὴν εὐχὴ ν᾿ ἀναστηθεῖ καὶ ὁ νεκρὸς στὴν οὐράνια βασιλεία. Τὰ «ἐννιάμερα» τελοῦνται γιὰ τὰ ἐννέα τάγματα τῶν αΰλων ἀγγέλων, μὲ τὴν εὐχὴ νὰ βρεθεῖ κοντά τους ἡ ἄϋλη ψυχὴ τοῦ νεκροῦ. Τὰ «τεσσαρακονθήμερα» τελοῦνται γιὰ τὴν Ἀνάληψη τοῦ Κυρίου, ποὺ ἔγινε σαράντα μέρες μετὰ τὴν Ἀνάστασή Του, μὲ τὴν εὐχὴ νὰ «ἀναληφθεῖ» καὶ ὁ νεκρός, νὰ συναντήσει τὸ Χριστὸ στοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ νὰ ζήσει γιὰ πάντα μαζί Του. Τὰ «ἐτήσια», τέλος, τελοῦνται τὴν ἐπέτειο ἡμέρα τοῦ θανάτου, σὲ ἀνάμνηση τῶν γενεθλίων τοῦ νεκροῦ, καθώς, γιὰ τοὺς πιστοὺς χριστιανούς, ἡμέρα τῆς ἀληθινῆς γεννήσεως εἶναι ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ σωματικοῦ θανάτου καὶ τῆς μεταστάσεως στὴν αἰώνια ζωή. Μνημόσυνα, ἀντίστοιχα μὲ τὰ παραπάνω, τελοῦνται τὸν τρίτο, ἕκτο καὶ ἔνατο μήνα ἀπὸ τὴν ἡμέρα τοῦ θανάτου («τρίμηνα», «ἑξάμηνα», «ἐννεάμηνα»). Τὴν μεγαλύτερη ὠφέλεια στοὺς νεκροὺς τὴν προξενεῖ ἡ τέλεση τῆς θείας εὐχαριστίας στὴ μνήμη τους, διότι τότε, μὲ τὶς μερίδες τους στὸ ἅγιο δισκάριο, «ἑνώνονται ἀόρατα μὲ τὸ Θεὸ καὶ ἐπικοινωνοῦν μαζί Του καὶ παρηγοροῦνται καὶ σώζονται καὶ εὐφραίνονται ἐν Χριστῷ» (ἅγιος Συ μεὼν Θεσσαλονίκης). Η αγάπη προς τους κεκοιμημένους οδήγησε την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία στην καθιέρωση ιδιαίτερης ημέρας της εβδομάδας για να προσευχηθούμε γι’ αυτούς. Η ημέρα του Σαββάτου είναι η ημέρα των κεκοιμημένων για αυτό και κατά την παράδοση τα μνημόσυνα οφείλουν να γίνονται το Σάββατο και όχι την Κυριακή. Η Κυριακή είναι η ημέρα της Αναστάσεως του Κυρίου γι’ αυτό και οι γάμοι γίνονται Κυριακή, άλλο αν κάποιοι λόγω κοσμικού φρονήματος και ότι βλέπουν τον γάμο κοσμική τελετή και όχι ιερό μυστήριο νυμφεύονται το Σάββατο. Sunday School Blessings February 2015 Dear St. Markella Parents, Happy New Year! I hope that this year brings you and your families health, happiness and success in all your endeavors. Congratulations to all of our students who participated in the Christmas Nativity Pageant in December 2014, bringing to life the story of our Lord and Savior Jesus’ sacred birth. The children learned, retold and acted out this story, which helped confirm the true “reason for the season” for all of us-to appreciate in our hearts that God sent his only son to us here on Earth, so that we could be saved from a life of sin. It also reminded us of the lesson of humility-that the King of Heaven, who could have been born unto parents with wealth and riches beyond compare, was instead born to poor parents, in the most humble of stables, surrounded by farm animals. This was a wonderful story and lesson, which we shared and discussed in Sunday School and were then able to watch, as it came to life in church. Kudos to all our fine actors and actresses! In Sunday School over the past few months, we have been working on reading, understanding and memorizing “The Lord’s Prayer”. In the younger grades, children start each session by doing their crosses and reciting (a few verses at a time) the prayer in English, as well as in Greek. As they learn these verses, new ones are introduced, and this will continue until all verses have been learned. In the upper grades, the children are reciting the prayer in English and Greek, with the teachers’ support (when needed), with a future goal of having each child understand and learn the prayer in both languages by heart. The teachers and I encourage you to spend some time each night, helping your child to read and recite this prayer. Looking ahead, on Sunday February 22, we will celebrate Cheese fare Sunday, the last Sunday of Lent when cheese and other dairy products are permitted to be consumed. We will also celebrate our “Annual Godparent Sunday”, when parents are encouraged to invite their children’s Godparents to church, to bring their children up to receive Holy Communion. After church, we will host our “Godparent Sunday Brunch” down in our church hall-all are welcome! We look forward to seeing all of the children with their Godparents that day, spending quality time together and remembering the special bond that they share in God’s house, because of God! During this month, when so many people focus on store-bought Valentines and other materialistic expressions of love, the Sunday School teachers and I hope to instill in your children a love of God, Jesus, church, faith and family. We will do our best to help your children discover the unwavering love that God always has for them, through stories, the Bible, pictures, games, activities and more! THE AGIASMA FEBRUARY MARCH 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 05 THE AGIASMA FEBRUARY MARCH 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 05 LENTEN AND HOLY FLOWER OFFERINGS Κατά τους Πατέρες, με τα μνημόσυνα παρέχεται όνησις δηλαδή ωφέλεια αλλά δεν ξέρουμε όμως τι είδους ωφέλεια είναι αυτή. Τα μνημόσυνα είναι η προσευχή των ζώντων μελών  που καταδεικνύει αγάπη και κοινωνία για τους απελθόντες. Οι ζώντες με τους κεκοιμημένους γίνονται αγκαλιά εις δόξα Κυρίου. Για τον Θεό είμαστε πρόσωπα μοναδικά γι’ αυτό και όταν πηγαίνουμε κόλλυβα στον ναό δίνουμε και το χαρτάκι με τα ονόματα. Φυσικά μπορεί να έχουμε αρκετές φορές το ίδιο όνομα και φυσικά το γράφουμε ξεχωριστά, διότι ο άνθρωπος είναι ξεχωριστός και μοναδικός. Αυτή η προσευχητική κοινωνία είναι ουράνια κατάσταση. Δεν αποκόπτουμε τους κεκοιμημένους από τους ζώντες, διότι «προσδοκώ ανάσταση νεκρών και ζωή του μέλλοντος αιώνος αμήν» μας λέει το Σύμβολο της πίστεως. Η Αγία μας Εκκλησία νοιάζεται για όλους γι’ αυτό και τα ψυχοσάββατα είναι ξεχωριστή ημέρα να θυμηθούμε και να προσευχηθούμε για τους κεκοιμημένους αδερφούς μας. Αυτά είναι το Σάββατο μετά το Ψυχοσάββατο της Απόκρεω δηλ. Το Σάββατο της Τυρινής κι επίσης το αμέσως επόμενο Σάββατο της πρώτης εβδομάδος των Νηστειών, το λεγόμενο Ψυχοσάββατο των Αγίων Θεοδώρων. Το Ψυχοσάββατο μας υπενθυμίζει τη διάσταση της αιώνιας ζωής, που φωτίζει και την επίγεια. Ας Τον παρακαλέσουμε λοιπόν. Και των κεκοιμημένων μνημόνευσον Σωτήρ μου, εν δόξη όταν έλθης. Upon the passing away of a loved one, it is traditional to take this sheet, which was once blessed by carrying the body of the Lord, and place it over our loved one on the day of his or her funeral. THE AGIASMA FEBRUARY MARCH 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 05 THE AGIASMA FEBRUARY MARCH 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 05 Πνευματικό Μήνυμα Του πατέρα Σαράντη ΨΥΧΟΣΑΒΒΑΤΑ SATURDAY OF THE SOULS «Μην κρίνετε τους συνανθρώπους σας, για να μη σας κρίνει κι εσάς ο Θεός.» Σεβαστοί μου αδελφοί εν Κυρίω Ιησού Χριστώ, Σας χαιρετώ με την χάρη του Χριστού. Είναι μετά μεγάλης και ιδιαιτέρας χαράς που επικοινωνώ μαζί σας καθώς ερχόμαστε στις μεγάλες ημέρες της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής. Φυσικά η μεγάλη Σαρακοστή συνδέεται πάντα με την αρετή της νηστείας. Μια από τις πολλές ερωτήσεις που πολλοί από εσάς ρωτήσατε καθώς σας επισκέφθηκα τελευταίως στις οικίες σας φέρνοντας την ευλογία του αγιασμού, ήταν περί της νηστείας. Πώς, γιατί και πότε νηστεύουμε. Πολλές ήταν κι’ οι απαντήσεις μου, βασιζόμενες στα ρητά της Αγίας Γραφής και καθώς διδάχθηκαν από τους άγιους πατέρες. Πάρα πολλά μπορούμε να γράψουμε περί νηστείας τροφών, αλλά λόγω του μικρού αφιερωθέντος χώρου, θα μοιραστούμε το χώρο περί της μεγάλης νηστείας του στόματος. Οι άγιοι πατέρες έχουν διδάξει ότι αυτό που πρέπει να προσέχουμε περισσότερο δεν είναι εκείνο που θα φάμε και θ’ αμαρτήσουμε, αλλά στο τι θα αποφύγουμε να νηστεύουμε με το στόμα, δηλαδή λόγια που βγαίνουν από το στόμα, λόγια κρίσεως και συκοφαντίας, διότι αυτό που βγαίνει από την καρδιά μας είναι που βλάφτει. Φυσικά ,αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι η νηστεία τροφών έχει μικρότερη αξία, διότι και αυτή είναι σημαντική. Η νηστεία κρίσεως διδάσκει η αγία γραφή ότι :«Με το κριτήριο που κρίνετε θα κριθείτε, και με το μέτρο που μετράτε θα μετρηθείτε. Πώς μπορείς και βλέπεις το σκουπιδάκι στο μάτι του αδελφού σου και δε νιώθεις ολόκληρο δοκάρι στο δικό σου μάτι; ... Υποκριτή! Βγάλε πρώτα από το μάτι σου το δοκάρι, και τότε θα δεις καθαρά και θα μπορέσεις  να βγάλεις το σκουπιδάκι από το μάτι του αδερφού σου» (Μτθ. 7, 1-5), Ο Απόστολος Παύλος στην Προς Ρωμαίους επιστολή του λέει το εξής: «Αλλά κι εσύ, άνθρωπέ μου, που κατακρίνεις αυτή τη διαγωγή, δεν είσαι λιγότερο ένοχος. Γιατί, κρίνοντας τον άλλο, καταδικάζεις τον ίδιο τον εαυτό σου, αφού κι εσύ ο κριτής τα ίδια κάνεις. Πραγματικά, ξέρουμε πως ο Θεός καταδικάζει δίκαια όσους έχουν παρόμοια διαγωγή. Πώς, λοιπόν, άνθρωπέ μου, νομίζεις πως εσύ θα ξεφύγεις από τη θεϊκή καταδίκη, αφού κάνεις όσα κάνουν αυτοί, που εσύ ο ίδιος τους κατακρίνεις;» (Ρω. 2, 1-3). Μέσα από τα λόγια του Αποστόλου αναδύεται μια σπουδαία αλήθεια. Στους άλλους πάντα βρίσκουμε τα ατοπήματα τους, ενώ τα δικά μας τα διαγράφουμε. Δυστυχώς δεν μένουμε μόνο στον εντοπισμό των λαθών των άλλων, αλλά προχωράμε ακόμα πιο πέρα. Ξεχνώντας παράλληλα την εντολή του Κυρίου μην κρίνεις για να μην κριθείς. Συνεπώς δεν έχουμε κανένα δικαίωμα να κρίνουμε τον πλησίον μας, αφού υπέρτατος Κριτής είναι μονάχα ο Θεός. Εμείς αποκλείουμε την πιθανότητα ότι ο αδελφός μας μπορεί να μετανόησε ήδη πικρά και βαθιά και να του συγχωρέθηκε η αμαρτία από τον Κύριο όπως ο Τελώνης του Ευαγγελίου. Κάποτε καθώς οι Φαρισαίοι έφεραν μπροστά στο Χριστό μια γυναίκα που είχε αμαρτήσει με μοιχεία, και για να τον φέρουν σε δύσκολη θέση του είπαν ότι ο Μωυσής έδωσε εντολή να λιθοβολούν τέτοιου είδους γυναίκες και ακολούθως Του ζήτησαν την γνώμη Του. Ο Κύριος μπροστά στην επιμονή τους τούς απάντησε: «Όποιος ανάμεσά σας είναι αναμάρτητος ας ρίξει πρώτος πέτρα πάνω της». Αυτοί σαν άκουσαν την απάντηση άρχισαν να φεύγουν ένας (Ιωαν. 8, 1-10).  Αυτό που πρέπει να κάνουμε επιτέλους είναι να δαμάσουμε τη γλώσσα μας και να χειραγωγήσουμε την σκέψη μας. Όλοι είμαστε ένοχοι ενώπιον του Θεού και όλοι κουβαλάμε πολλές αμαρτίες. Ένας τρόπος που μπορούμε να αποφύγουμε την κρίση και συκοφαντία είναι το να συνχωρούμε τους συνάνθρωπους μας, ακόμα περισσότερο εκείνους που δεν είναι πλέον μαζί μας. Ασκώντας την παράδοση των Ψυχοσάββατων προσφέροντας κόλλυβα υπερ των ψυχών αυτών. Μελετώντας την Αγία Γραφή, συχνή εξομολόγηση, προσευχή και θεία μετάληψη. Και ας μην ξεχνούμε την βοήθεια μας προς του πτωχούς, επισκέφθοντας τους ασθενείς και προσεύχοντας υπέρ υγείας και ειρήνης του κόσμου. Η μικρή αλλά τακτική βοήθεια μας προς την εκκλησία πραγματικά θα μας αποφεύγει από την σκέψη κρίσεως άλλων. Μ’ αυτές οι πράξεις ακριβώς, προσηλωνόμαστε και προσέχουμε τις δικές μας αμαρτίες και όχι του πλησίου μας, εκτελώντας την καλήν νηστεία, και όπως τονίζει ο Χριστός "Μόνο ένας είναι ο Αγαθός, μόνον Ο Θεός» και ο μόνος Κριτής και ουδείς αναμάρτητος. Cover the wheat with water and soak overnight. Drain and rinse. Cover with 1 quart water in a large pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered several hours, keeping the wheat covered with water and stirring occasionally, until wheat becomes puffy and tender. (Cooking time varies with time of soaking.) Drain in a colander, rinse, and drain again. Spread the wheat out on a smooth dish towel to dry overnight. (If desired, burn a kandili/ vigil lamp beside the wheat as it dries.)Prepare all other ingredients but do not assembly until the day of the service to prevent mush like texture. HOW TO MAKE KOLYVA 1 cup shelled heat (I buy mine from Nature’s) 1/8 cup granulated sugar ¼ cup finely chopped walnuts ¼ cup slivered almonds ½ cup white raisins ½ tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. coriander ½ cup powdered sugar ½ cup finely ground zwieback toast Optional: seeds of ½ a pomegranate, ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley, ¼ cup pine nuts Decoration: slivered almonds, white candied almonds (Jordan almonds or Koufeta), large silver dragees (silver koufeta). Sarantis "Do not judge your fellow human man, so you will not be judged by God." Dearest Brethren in the Lord, I greet you with the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is with great and particular joy that I communicate with you as we are entering the season of Great Lent. All of us know that Great Lent is always associated with the virtue of fasting. One of the many questions that many of you had asked, as I recently visited you at your homes during the Epiphany period of sanctification, was about fasting How, why and when do we fast? Many were also my responses to you, all based on the sayings of Scripture and according to the teachings of the Holy Fathers. So much have been written about fasting from foods, so I would direct my thoughts in this dedicated space to the fasting, not from foods, but rather on fasting from the words of the mouth. The Holy Fathers have taught that “it is not what goes in to the mouth, but what comes out of the mouth,” that we should be paying attention when we fast, like words of judgment and slander. We may be fasting, tithing and go to church as the Pharisee, but we may be slandering and judging others. Of course, this does not mean that fasting from foods has less value, because that’s also very important. The Bible teaches us to refrain from judging others: '“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. (Mt. 7, 1-5). The Apostle Paul in his Epistle to the Romans says: "You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? "(Ro. 2, 1-3). Through the words, we recognize a great truth. We always see the faults of others, but not our own. Many of us, if not all, are forgetting our Lord’s command, “do not judge so you will not be judged,” and consequently, we have no right to judge our neighbor, the right belongs only to God alone. In our judgment, we may be excluding the possibility that our brother may have already repented bitterly and deeply and that the Lord has forgiven his sins as we understand it by the Gospel reading on Sunday of the Pharisee and the Publican. In the Holy Scriptures also is written that once, the Pharisees brought forward to Christ an adulterous woman, and reminding Him of the Mosaic Law, which commanded to stone the woman to death. The Lord then replied: “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her. When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones” (Read, John 8, 1-10). What is asked from all of us, as an answer to “good fasting,” is to tame our tongue and guide thoughts away from slandering others. Each and every one of us is guilty before God since we all carry around our many sins. One way that we can avoid criticizing and slandering others is to forgive those who hurt us, especially those who are no longer with us. Exercising the tradition of offering kollyva on Saturday of the Souls. Studying the Bible, through confession, prayer and attending Divine Liturgy. Help to the poor and praying for health and peace of the world. These humble acts that will help us concentrate on our own sins. With these humble words, I greet you with Christ’s love and wishing you a good Great Lent and “good fasting” Brotherly in His service, +Fr. Τους εύχομαι Καλή Δύναμη και την ευλογία του Κυρίου, για την ειλικρινή δέσμευσή τους να υπηρετήσουν τον Χριστό. Είναι επιτακτικό ότι, και πρέπει να τονίσω σε ΣΑΣ μιά πολύ σημαντική αλήθεια. Τώρα που έχουμε νέα εκκλησία πρέπει όλοι να πιστοποιηθούμε ότι τα έξοδα της εκκλησίας μας αυξήθηκαν δραστικά. Ως εκ τούτου, η εκκλησία για να καλύψει τις οικονομικές ανάγκες στην ώρα τους, χρειάζεται την φιλότιμη βοήθεια σας. Είναι η ελπίδα μου ότι ο καθένας μπορεί να βοηθήσει με πολλούς τρόπους. Πρώτος είναι η αποστολή της ετήσιας χριστιανικής προσφοράς σας του έτους 2015, όπως έχετε ήδη λάβει το γράμμα. Δεύτερο, η συμμετοχή σας στην προετοιμασία του ετήσιου Φεστιβάλ-υπάρχει τόση πολύ δουλειά-μπορείτε να ενημερωθείτε μέσω του Κυριακάτικου δελτίου για την ημέρα συνεδριάσεως, και τρίτον, φυσικά η συμμετοχή σας στις ακολουθίες. Πιστεύουμε ότι όλοι σας αγαπάτε την εκκλησία και ότι θα κάνετε τα πάντα ανάλογα με την δύναμη σας για το καλό της εκκλησίας μας. It is with great joy that I communicate with you with this bulletin as we have entered the second month of the New Year 2015 and soon to the Lenten Season! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new members to the Parish Council Mr. Dimitrios Koukounis, Mr. John Leontakianakos and Michael Vouvoudakis. I wish them all kali Dynamis and all the blessings of the Lord, for their sincere commitment to serve the Lord through you. In addition, I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to my fellow co-workers, the Parish Council Members, for the great “honor and trust” they bestowed on me once again, as they elected me President of the Parish Council. It is my sincere wish that will work harmoniously together with wisdom for the best interest of our community. My fellow parishioners, just as I am counting on the integrity, wisdom and cooperation of my peers of the Parish Council, I also believe that I am counting on your support as well. It is imperative that I must emphasize to YOU a very important point that now that we have a new church, its expenses have increased drastically. Therefore, in order for the church to meet its financial needs promptly, it is my hope that you may help out in many ways. First by sending your annual Stewardship/Membership obligation of the year 2015, as you have already received the Stewardship letter; second be involved in the preparations of our annual festival-there is so much work to be done-please check the Sunday Bulleting for time and place for the weekly meetings; and thirdly, of course participating in the church services often. We believe that all of you love our church and that you will do everything to your power to make things as plausible possible for our community. Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works! Is it said by what kind of works? If you see a poor man, take pity on him! If you see in enemy, be reconciled to him! If you see a friend gaining honor, envy him not! If you see a handsome woman, pass her by! For let not the mouth only fast, but also the eye, and the ear, and the feet, and the hands, and all the members of our bodies. Let the hands fast, by being pure from rapine and avarice. Let the feet fast, by ceasing from running to the unlawful spectacles. Let the eyes fast, being taught never to fix themselves rudely upon handsome countenances, or to busy themselves with strange beauties. For looking is the food of the eyes, but if this be such as is unlawful or forbidden, it mars the fast; and upsets the whole safety of the soul; but if it be lawful and safe, it adorns fasting. For it would be among things the most absurd to abstain from lawful food because of the fast, but with the eyes to touch even what is forbidden. Do you not eat flesh? Feed not upon lasciviousness by means of the eyes. Let the ear fast also. The fasting of the ear consists in refusing to receive evil speaking and calumnies. ‘You shall not receive a false report,’ it says. Let the mouth too fast from disgraceful speeches and railing. For what does it profit if we abstain from birds and fishes; and yet bite and devour our brethren? The evil speaker eats the flesh of his brother, and bites the body of his neighbor.
