8 The Augment Only occurs in the Indicative Mood.
Only occurs in Secondary Tenses (imperfect, aorist, pluperfect). If the stem begins in a consonant, augment is ἐ- If the stem begins in a vowel, the stem vowel lengthens (long vowels are η and ω). If the stem begins in a diphthong, either the first vowel of the diphthong lengthens or the diphthong is not changed. In a compound verb, the augment is between the preposition & stem (e.g. καταβαίνω in present becomes κατέβαινον in imperfect).
