Take a pencil.

Πάρε ένα μολύβι.

I also want a book.

Θέλω και ένα βιβλίο.

Do you have a book?

Έχεις βιβλίο;

Yes, I have a book.

Ναι, έχω βιβλίο.

Give me a book, please.

Δώσε μου βιβλίο, σε παρακαλώ.

Thank you, Maria.

Ευχαριστώ, Μαρία.

You are welcome.

Παρακαλώ.

Say: You are welcome.

Παρακαλώ.

Notice that “you are welcome” is the same word as “please” Notice that “you are welcome” is the same word as “please”. It is like saying “please don’t mention it”.

Say again: You are welcome.

Παρακαλώ.

The notebook

Το τετράδιο

Say: the notebook

Το τετράδιο

Now, ask Maria: Maria, do you have a notebook?

Μαρία, έχεις τετράδιο;

Do you want a notebook?

Θέλεις τετράδιο;

Yes, I want a notebook.

Ναι, θέλω τετράδιο.

I have a notebook.

Έχω τετράδιο.

Give me a notebook.

Δώσε μου ένα τετράδιο.

Take a notebook.

Πάρε τετράδιο.

one

ένα

ένα

Take a (one) notebook.

Πάρε ένα τετράδιο.

Take a (one) pencil.

Πάρε ένα μολύβι.

Take a (one) book.

Πάρε ένα βιβλίο.

In Greek, we do not use as often an indefinite article, as we do in English.

Open (command)

Άνοιξε

Άνοιξε

Tell someone: open (as a command)

Άνοιξε

Now say: Open the window.

Άνοιξε το παράθυρο.

Ask someone to open his book.

Άνοιξε το βιβλίο σου.

Ask Maria to open her notebook.

Μαρία, άνοιξε το τετράδιό σου.

Do you remember the word for door?

Η πόρτα.

It is a feminine word.

How would you ask someone to open the door?

In this case, the word door follows the verb “open”.

It is what we call in syntax the OBJECT.

The word door, when used as an object, becomes την πόρτα.

Now, say: open the door.

Άνοιξε την πόρτα.

Do you remember the word for bag?

Η τσάντα.

It is also a feminine word (judging by the article «η».

Now, ask someone to open his bag.

Άνοιξε την τσάντα σου.

Did you remember to put the word “τσάντα” in the OBJECT form = “την τσάντα”.

Close (command)

Κλείσε

You say now: close (as a command)

Κλείσε

Say: close your book

Κλείσε το βιβλίο σου.

Close the window.

Κλείσε το παράθυρο.

Close the door.

Κλείσε την πορτα.

Again, the word “πόρτα” is an OBJECT here.
