th May 2012 WORLD SPORTS Vol. 1 Issue 1 AMATEUR EXCELLENCE Henry Carpenter, aged 13, is the newest and youngest member of the Brislington Harriers. On Saturday he took part in the cross-country race, competing against other teams. Although he didn’t win, he was pleased with his performance. When he arrived at the finishing line, muddy and exhausted, he said that he was over the moon about completing his first race for the club. He said that he didn’t want to be a professional athlete, but ran for fun. He thought that too much training would take up all his spare time, so he wouldn’t be able to meet his friends. Harry also likes swimming and football, but does these just for fun too. (Magic Moments 3, Hillside Press) RISING STAR Melanie Cook, aged 13, is the new champion gymnast. Last night she won the national competition, and will represent Scotland in the international competition next month. After winning the competition, a tearful Melanie told me how happy she felt. She said that all her hard work had paid off. Melanie follows a very strict diet and practises every day. She said that she doesn’t have any friends, but doesn’t have time to be lonely. All her spare time is taken up with practice sessions with her coach, Selina Small, herself an international champion. Melanie is very slim and supple. Her graceful movement and rhythm impressed the judges, who gave her maximum points. When she was asked if she had any regrets, she admitted that she would like to have friends, like other teenagers, but now that she is the national champion, she is really proud to represent her country. ©Υπουργείο Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού ββββββββββββββββββ
