The Ionides Collection Constantine Alexander Ionides ( ) belonged to a wealthy Anglo-Greek merchant family. He made a fortune on the Stock Exchange and in 1865 bought a grand house in the newly fashionable London suburb of Holland Park. With the help of the painter Alphonse Legros, Ionides assembled a fine art collection, wich he valued at nearly £ It included around ninety paintings with portraits by Botticelli and Tintoretto and Pre-Raphaelite works by Burne- Jones and Rossetti. Ionides was also an important early collector of French 19 th century painters, such as Degas, Delacroix and Millet. He bequeathed his pictures to the V& A to be displayed as a single collection. The drawings and prints, icluding watercolours by Daumier and many Rembrandt etchings can be seen in the Print Room. The Ionides collection provides a unique insight into progressive artistic taste in Victorian Britain. It is displayed double-hung as it was in Ionides home, with sculpture and furniture that belonged to him and his family.
