This preparation of information enabled computers to find and manage it. Computers ‘management’ of information was never very intelligent but that didn’t matter because so significant manual input overcame these limitations. Now that over 80% of daily business takes place via unstructured information across multiple devices including PDAs, phones and laptops, the scale of the information mountain; the value of the content itself and the speed with which this content is created needs to be more immediately utilized and means that the preparation of material in the way that it used to be prepared previously is no longer feasible. Autonomy avoids any need to manually ‘prepare’ information – regardless of its structure - and automates the many tasks and processes that need to be performed on it regardless of purpose, location or sector. There are currently 2 basic principals to handling unstructured information one is to throw it all into a key word search engine and when it is needed, a human retrieves it, reads it and then performs the business operation. Although a computer is involved this is still manual. The other approach is for a human being to read every piece of information and to insert clues or tags to tell the computer what it is about. The problem with both these methods is that being manual they are very expensive, cannot scale and requires people to defocus away from core business tasks, and even when this process is completed, the results are very inaccurate. Forms are used for capturing a user’s interests or profile information, again this is manual and largerly incomplete (what a user is doing today, is probably not what thet will be doing next week/month) Example a few of the manual processes with examples, e.g. It can take about 3 minutes to categorize and tag a piece of information –i.e. roughly 400 days to categorise 50,000 documents by hand CUSTOMER QUOTES: BAE SYSTEMS discovered that over 80 per cent of employees were wasting an average of 30 minutes a day retrieving information, while 60 percent were spending an hour or more duplicating the work of others. Ένα rule με λέξεις–κλειδιά μπορεί να μοιάζει με αυτό: <Ισραήλ AND Παλαιστίνη> <Ισραήλ OR Παλαιστίνη> ή Αρχικά μοιάζει επαρκές, ωστόσο αυτό το rule αυτό θα φέρει και έγγραφα τα οποία ΔΕΝ σχετίζονται με την τρέχουσα έκρηξη βίας. Πχ: «Ισραήλ: Το πλήθος των Εβραίων στην Παλαιστίνη ήταν πολύ μικρό στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα. Αυξήθηκε από που ήταν το έτος 1845 σε σχεδόν μέχρι το 1914.»

Οι συγγραφείς των κειμένων υποθέτουν (ορθά!) ότι ο αναγνώστης γνωρίζει έστω και ελάχιστα για το θέμα. Οπότε είναι πολύ πιθανό το κείμενο να μην περιέχει καμία από τις λέξεις – κλειδιά. Πχ: «Ο Γιασέρ Αραφάτ αντέδρασε στις πρόσφατες επιθέσεις αυτοκτονίας κηρύσσοντας τη Δυτική Όχθη σε κατάσταση εκτάκτου ανάγκης και συλλαμβάνοντας 75 μαχητές»

Άρα, πρέπει να διαβάσουμε με προσοχή κείμενα σαν αυτό και να αλλάξουμε το rule. Πχ το rule θα μπορούσε να γίνει: <"Αραφάτ" OR "επιθέσεις αυτοκτονίας" OR "κατάσταση εκτάκτου ανάγκης" OR "Δυτική Όχθη"> Στην περίπτωση αυτή θα λάβουμε και άλλα κείμενα τα οποία περιέχουν τη φράση-κλειδί «επιθέσεις αυτοκτονίας». Πχ: «Λίγες ώρες μετά από τις επιθέσεις αυτοκτονίας στους Δίδυμους Πύργους και το Πεντάγωνο…» “Κατάσταση εκτάκτου ανάγκης στο νησί της Σάμου: Οι τελευταίες βροχοπτώσεις προκάλεσαν τη διακοπή της κυκλοφορίας στο επαρχιακό οδικό δίκτυο του νησιού κατά τη διάρκεια της νύχτας…»

Άρα απαιτείται ένα πιο πολύπλοκο rule το οποίο μπορεί να περιλαμβάνει κάποιο όνομα συμμετέχοντος, ένδειξη για την περιοχή, μία φράση σχετική με βία κλπ. Πχ: <("Αραφάτ" OR "Σαρόν") AND ("επιθέσεις αυτοκτονίας" OR "κατάσταση εκτάκτου ανάγκης") AND ("Ισραήλ" OR "Παλαιστίνη" OR "Δυτική Όχθη")> Το παραπάνω rule ωστόσο δεν πρόκειται να αντιληφθεί το παρακάτω κείμενο: «Ο πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ Τζ. Μπους καταδίκασε τους βομβαρδισμούς στην Ιερουσαλήμ, δηλώνοντας: Η είδηση των χθεσινοβραδινών βομβαρδισμών της Ιερουσαλήμ με λύπησε και μου προκάλεσε αποτροπιασμό. Τις καταδικάζω ως δολοφονικές πράξεις που κανένας έλλογος άνθρωπος δεν μπορεί να τις ανεχθεί και καμία αιτία δεν μπορεί να τις δικαιολογήσει.»

Άρα πρέπει να επεκτείνουμε πάλι το rule. Πχ: <("Αραφάτ" OR "Σαρόν" OR "Μπους") AND ("επιθέσεις αυτοκτονίας" OR "κατάσταση εκτάκτου ανάγκης" OR "βομβαρδισμών") AND ("Ισραήλ" OR "Παλαιστίνη" OR "Δυτική Όχθη" OR "Ιερουσαλήμ")> Αυτή η διαδικασία είναι αέναη, χωρίς καν να έχουμε λάβει υπόψη τη συντήρηση καθώς αλλάζει η έννοια της πληροφορίας με το πέρασμα του χρόνου. Αυτή η διαδικασία θα εκτελείται όποτε εισέρχονται στο σκηνικό νέα πρόσωπα (πχ πρωθυπουργοί κλπ), νέοι όροι, νέες τοποθεσίες κλπ.
