These matrices are computed by solving constrained optimization problems. Constraints related to Quality of Communication and Consumed Power The distributed nature of the problem makes it different than MIMO Beamforming Interference Alignment (IA): Generally speaking, an IA technique aligns the interference signals to a subspace orthogonal to the one of the signals of interest at the intended receiver. 6 ΘΑΛΗΣ – “ENDECON”: WP2, Task 2.2 (cont.) ________________________________________________ Cognitive Radio Networks: Cognitive radio technology refers to systems that are aware of their environment and capable of reconfiguring themselves to reach certain objectives. Primary (licenced) and Secondary Users In overlay CR networks, the secondary users monitor the spectrum and access it only when they sense an unused slot. In underlay CR networks, the secondary users are allowed to utilize the same frequency spectrum as the primary users in a carefully controlled manner. Research directions:  Cooperative (and distributed) spectrum sensing.  Track the spatio-temporal evolution of the sensed channels (adaptive channel gain cartography). 9 ΘΑΛΗΣ – “ENDECON”: WP2, Task 2.3 (cont.) ________________________________________________ Cross-layer design: To fully optimize wireless broadband networks, both the challenges from the physical medium and the QoS-demands from the applications have to be taken into account. Rate, power and coding at the physical layer can be adapted to meet the requirements of the applications given the current channel and network conditions. Knowledge has to be shared between (all) layers to obtain the highest possible adaptivity. 13 ΘΑΛΗΣ – “ENDECON”: WP2, Task 2.5 (cont.) ________________________________________________ Smart Grid (the power grid of the future): An electric system that uses information, two-way cyber-secure communication technologies, and computational intelligence, in an integrated fashion, across electricity generation, transmission, distribution and consumption to achieve an operation that is clean, safe, secure, reliable, resilient, efficient, and sustainable. The main idea: A communication network that has access to information concerning the energy grid state could plan its operations so as to optimize the energy consumption (e.g., from the regenerative resources). On the other hand, the com. network, could provide information to the power network concerning its current and forecasted needs at its different parts so as the power network to distribute the required energy in the most efficient way.
