84 Background:  In recent years, attention has been drawn to the fact that compassion towards the patient seems to have decreased  Many healthcare professionals are keen to identify ways of restoring compassion  Patients who are treated with compassion, may recover faster, may manage chronic illness more effectively, and may experience a reduction in stress and anxiety,  The literature suggests that there could be certain biological processes which are activated via the attributes of compassion (such as kindness, empathy and mindfulness), which might lead to greater well- being and better physical health in both recipients and providers. Identifying an association between perceived compassion, psychosocial factors and biological measures amongst patients and general practitioners in primary care settings on Crete, Greece: a pilot study-I Source: Restoring humanity in health care through the art of compassion: an issue for the teaching and research agenda in rural health care. International Journal of Rural and Remote Health, editorial 2010. Proposal by Sue Shea in collaboration with the Clinic of Social and Family Medicine

85 Objectives of the study: Validation of Greek versions of instruments (where not already validated in Greek) for measuring physicians’ perceptions and patient experiences of providing/receiving compassionate care Investigate a possible correlation of the above with the well-being, and levels of stress/anxiety/depression of the physician Investigate a possible correlation of scores from the compassion-related measures and biomarkers in order to identify whether perceptions of compassion might have biological effects on the physicians themselves Obtain a basic understanding of a potential relationships between physicians scores on compassion-related measures, and patients perceptions of receipt of compassion Investigate possible effects of perceived compassion on the well being, and levels of stress/anxiety/depression of the patient Identify relationships between patient biomarkers and perceived receipt of compassionate care. 86 Assessing the effects of Dance and Lifestyle on reduced CVD on Crete: cultural copying to promote health and social well-being in the UK and elsewhere’-I Background:  Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) - is a common disorder and a healthcare priority  The 7 Countries Study (Keys et al), found Cretan participants had reduced incidence of CVD, compared to other countries and other parts of Greece  Crete is rich in tradition, and with regard to music and dancing Possible psychosocial determinants:  Is the contribution of regular dance a factor?  Dance has obvious effect on physical health  Could dance also be beneficial in a spiritual sense, improving QoL/well-being, reducing social isolation?  Can dance activity reduce CVD risk factors in relation to stress? Proposal by Sue Shea in collaboration with the Clinic of Social and Family Medicine

87 Objectives of the study:  Gain a greater understanding of factors contributing to reduced CVD on rural Crete, by investigating the role of dance, together with other possible contributory factors  Utilise this information to develop an intervention aimed at decreasing CVD risk, improving quality of life, and modifying risk factors such as stress and social isolation in susceptible groups in Greece, UK, and elsewhere  Recruit participants with high CVD risk and allocate them to either an intervention consisting of dance activity and an educational programme, or to a programme consisting of educational information only  Obtain clinical, lifestyle, and pyschosocial measures, pre- and post-study  Conduct a comparison between the two groups  Monitor the effects of the intervention in terms of reduction in stress and CVD risk, reduced social isolation, and improvement of quality of life and well-being  Assess the effectiveness and acceptability of the intervention programme  Utilise the findings to help enhance health policies in the UK and Greece, and to promote multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural research Assessing the effects of Dance and Lifestyle on reduced CVD on Crete: cultural copying to promote health and social well-being in the UK and elsewhere’-II
