Friday, 17 April- Joy Meeting Welcome and Good Morning Welcome to the St. Markella Greek Orthodox Church! If you are visiting us for the first time, we are honored to have you with us! The Divine Liturgy offers us communion with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through hymns and prayers, the hearing of the Holy Gospel, and the Holy Eucharist. It is a time of personal and corporate prayer, and in the words of our Lord: For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them. Please note that only those who are baptized and/or confirmed in an Eastern Orthodox Church and are in good standing in the Orthodox faith may participate in the Holy Sacraments of the Church, including receiving Holy Communion. At the end of the Liturgy, you are invited to come up and receive blessed holy bread, called "antidoron". If you have questions about this, please feel free to ask our priest! We invite you to join us after this morning's Liturgy for coffee hour. Please take the time to visit our website (www.agia-markella.org) for regular updates as well as interesting articles and links. Furthermore, it will be a great pleasure for Fr. Sarantis to meet you. May God bless you and, again, welcome.www.agia-markella.org

2 Page 3 Page 6 LENTEN AND HOLY FLOWER OFFERINGS Please consider one of these items for the heath of your family or in Memory of a loved one One of the many beautiful traditions which accompany the celebration of the Greek Orthodox Holy Week is for the faithful of the Church to bring a flat white sheet to be used during the services when we take Jesus down from the Cross on Good Friday afternoon. Upon the completion of the 40 days after the Resurrection of Christ, Ascension Thursday, these sheets are returned to the faithful and are to be kept in each person’s home. Upon the passing away of a loved one, it is traditional to take this sheet, which was once blessed by carrying the body of the Lord, and place it over our loved one on the day of his or her funeral. Please bring only one sheet per family, and in blue ink, write your family name and “ Easter 2015” on the sheet so it can be returned to you after the Feast of the Ascension. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- For the Lenten and Holy Flower offerings please contact the church office at 516-783- 5760 or fill out the form below. Senior Citizens - Golden Stars Our Senior Citizens Group has been regrouped and meets every Thursday at noon until 2pm for now, in the church hall. Please come and join us! The Gospel of Mark 10:32-45 5 th Sunday of Lent At that time, Jesus taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Sunday School Is Open! All Greek School children must attend Sunday School. Sunday School will begin at 10:30 and meet in the first couple of pews for 5 minutes with Fr. Sarantis, and then they will resume class in the downstairs classrooms. CELL PHONES PLEASE!.....we kindly request that upon entering the church you must turn off or silence your phones. If you must make a call or text you must exit the church and do so.
