THE AGIASMA APRIL MAY 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 06 THE AGIASMA APRIL MAY 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 06 Holy Thursday The Penitent Thief: An Example of True Confession and Repentance In the Gospel of Luke 23:39-43, we read: “Two men were crucified at the same time as Jesus, one on his right hand and one on his left. Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us." The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal. "Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." He replied to him, "Amen I say to you today you will be with me in Paradise." What can we learn from the two thieves crucified next to Jesus? The life of Jesus was a mission of love and His death was no exception. The crucifixion of Jesus upon the cross at Golgotha is a lesson in living. Jesus loved to teach by using metaphor. The life and death of Jesus was a metaphor for the way we should conduct our lives. The Lord Jesus was suffering in a way that we cannot begin to grasp or even partially understand, so too was this criminal. He was never to come down from that cross alive, and yet he sensed something in Jesus that moved him in such a way that it became the road to his salvation. If ever there was a soul soaring on the brink of Hell it was this criminal, a virtual nobody hanging beside the Son of God. In a heartbeat, he voiced what his intuition had detected; that Jesus was indeed the Son of God! Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom'". What Jesus did next was a wonderful example of understanding, acceptance, love, and compassion all wrapped up in one conclusive act. Without hesitation Jesus responded to his plea for mercy: "Jesus answered him, 'I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.'" We can learn from one of the two who were crucified next to Jesus. It is never too late to repent and ask the Lord to accept us. Jesus cleansed this man from his sins, received him graciously, and justified him unconditionally. He conferred upon a sinner the gift of eternal life. But what of the other offender! We have learned that we can be saved, even at the very hour of our death, and yet this is not the reality for all. It comes down to a matter of faith. It is never too late to repent, and to announce your faith in Jesus! Many have approached the word of God with doubts and contempt. The Bible is under constant attack from those who would seek to 'prove' that it is wrong, or contains false teachings, just as the thief hanging beside Jesus, with the same level of skepticism, challenged Jesus to 'prove' that He was the Son of God by bringing Himself down from the cross. However God doesn't retaliate or become angry when we try to tempt Him, He doesn't attack us or abandon us. When we honestly approach Him -repent via the sacrament of confession- we can gain some insight into what it must have been like for the thief on the cross to be prized and accepted in spite of past indiscretions. When we come to Him without excuse and offer our heart and soul to Him, we can experience the awesome love and grace of the Lord. The thief's conversion is given as an example of Confession, a repentance of the necessary steps, one must take to arrive at salvation through Christ: An awareness of personal sin, repentance of sin, acceptance of Christ and salvation's promise of eternal life. Faithful are encouraged to take the icon home for a week for blessing. All interest are to call Fr. Sarantis for arrangements. HOSPITAL VISITATION Nowadays, due to the new HIPAA laws, it is difficult for Fr. Sarantis to obtain and to visit parishioners in the near by hospitals. These laws do not allow the hospital to release any information, or even the name of the patient, unless you are their doctor or family member. Nonetheless, Fr. Sarantis continues his regular hospital visits to Mercy Memorial Hospital, South Shore, which still allows him to see the names of Greek Orthodox patients in its computer, but in other are hospitals he is not able to get these names. In order for Fr. Sarantis to be more effective in visiting you or your loved ones in the hospital, or at home, you must please inform him by contacting the church. He will not know to visit you unless he knows that you are in the hospital. When you register at the local hospitals please make sure you inform the admissions office that you wish to be listed as a member of Saint Markella and as a Greek Orthodox Christian. If you also wish to receive Holy Communion, please let the church know beforehand. We thank you for your assistance and cooperation. CONFESSION:** Fr. Αγαπητά μου αδέλφια εν Κυρίω Ιησού Χριστώ, Με την Κυριακή της Σταυροπροσκηνήσεως εισήλθαμε στο δεύτερο μέρος της αγίας και Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής. Καθώς χαιρετώ μ’ αγάπη τον κάθε ένα σας κρατώντας την ελπίδα στο δεξί μου χέρι και το κουράγιο στο άλλο, υπονοώ ότι μ’ αυτό τον τρόπο να κοιτάξουμε στον καθρέπτη τον εσωτερικό εαυτό μας δια να προετοιμαστούμε δια το μεγάλο πανηγύρι του Αγίου Πάσχα. Η Ορθόδοξος πίστης μας περισσότερο από καθ' άλλη πίστη έχει κίνητρο τη χαρά δια την αιώνιο ζωή μας στον παράδεισο. Αρχή της νηστείας μας ηταν το Μέγα Απόδειπνο και ο νηστείσιμος δείπνος που μοιραστήκαμε όλοι μαζί την Καθαρά Δευτέρα βράδυ, που ο κρυώδεις καιρός δεν μπόρεσε να μας σταματήσει. Ο Χριστός μάς οδήγησε κοντά Του δια να καταλάβουμε την αγάπη του ότι το βάρος της νηστείας δεν είναι βαρύ όταν έχουμε στο νού μας τον Χριστό ως οδηγό. Η παρουσία μας στους Χαιρετισμούς προς την Παναγία μας κάθε Παρασκευή βράδυ μας δίνουν την ελπίδα να έχουμε ενεργούσα δύναμη, κι έτσι να ελένχουμε τον εαυτόν μας στη πορεία της δικαιοσύνης και για το καλό ης νέας μας εκκλησίας που χρειάζεται την συμμετοχή ΜΑΣ για τον κάθε σκοπόν της, νεολαίας, ηλικιωμώνων και των δικών μας αναγκών. Μ' αυτό τον τρόπο, θα δοξάσουμε με ύμνους πίστεως την γιορτή του θαύματος της αναστάσεως του Αγίου Λαζάρου (έτσι συμβολίζοντας και την «εκ νεκρών» μέλλουσαν δική μας ανάσταση, δοξολογούντας το Κύριον μας με τον ύμνο του "Ωσαννά εν τοις Υψίστοις", την Κυριακή των Βαΐων. Ας σηκώσουμε και εμείς τα βάγια της ψυχής μας με χαρά και αγαλλίαση να υποδεχτούμε τον Χριστό την Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα και τα άγια πάθη Του, με σεβασμό και ολοκαρδίως, όχι δια λογαριασμό του Χριστού, αλλά δια την μεγάλη αγάπη Του που μας υποδηλώνει με την σεμνή Θυσία Του, πάνω στο Σταυρό, για όλους εμάς. Ελάτε να συνπροσευχηθούμε μαζί Του στον Κήπο της Γεσθημανής, στην πανέρμορφη νέα εκκλησία μας, να συνζήσουμε μαζί Του την προδοσία του Ιούδα, όχι με το φιλί της προδοσίας και της συκοφαντίας, αλλά μ’ ασπασμό αγάπης μεταξύ μας. Ελάτε κοντά να δείξουμε στην νέα εκκλησία ότι είμαστε πνευματικά αδέλφια, όχι με λόγια, αλλά με καλά και αγαθά έργα, προσφέρνοντας το «λάδι» μας, (συνδρομή) όπως κάναμε στα χωριά μας εκείνο τον καιρό, υποδηλώνοντας ότι η εκκλησία είναι δική μας. Ας μήν αφήσουμε τον Χριστόν μόνον όπως έκαναν οι μαθηταί Του από το φόβο τους, αλλά να Τον επισκεφτούμε στα νοσοκομεία, στα γεροντοκομεία. Ελάτε να ευλογηθούμε με το Άγιο του Ευχέλαιο της Μεγάλης Τετάρτης δια την υγεία του σώματος και της ψυχής μας. Ελάτε να κρεμάσουμε στεφάνια, «οι αμαρτίες μας», πάνω στο Σταυρό Του, έτσι να δακρύσουμε την χαρά της συνχωρήσεως, αφού πρώτα συγχωρήσουμε τους συνάδελφους μας. Ελάτε να εορτάσουμε Την Ταφή Του τον Άγιο Επιτάφιο την Μεγάλη Παρασκευή, και να θάψουμε μαζί Του την αδικία, την ζήλια δια να αναστηθούμε μαζί Του καινούργοι άνθρωποι αγάπης, προικισμένοι την αιώνιον ζωή του Παραδείσου Του, καθώς απαντούμε στην πρόσκληση Του «Δεύτε λάβεται Φώς», το Φώς της σωτηρίας μας, μαζί με την Θεία Κοινωνία και να κραυγήσουμε δυνατά το «Χριστός Ανέστη!!» ΕΛΑΤΕ! Μην μείνετε έξω της Βασιλείας του Χριστού μας! Είναι μεγάλη και ετοιμασμένει γιά όλους μας. Μ’ αυτά τα λίγα λόγια και εκ μέρους της σεβαστής Πρεσβυτέρας Νόρμας, σας απευθύνομαι τις εκκαρδίως θερμότατες ευχές μας σ’ όλους σας, να περάσουμε όλοι μαζί, μια καλή ειρηνική Μεγαλοβδόμαδα και καλή Ανάσταση. Sarantis Loulakis Saint Markella Church – Easter 2015 My dear spiritual Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, With the Sunday of Veneration of the Holy Cross we have entered the second half of the Great Lent, and as I greet each and every one of you with words of hope written on my right hand and courage, it is fitting to suggest that all of us should reflect on our spiritual efforts as we prepare for the Great Feast, The Panigiri, of Easter. Our Orthodox faith stresses joy as its message of spirit and purpose in life. Although, we entered the Great Lent last month with a somber mind, it is indeed joy that initiates our salvation. We are celebrating with hymns to the Theotokos every Friday night, as the Holy Father, St. John the Damascenes wrote due to the “joy of victory over the enemy” of Christianity. Our Sunday school children held the holy icons high and paraded them in the church on Orthodoxy Sunday, the first Sunday of Lent, as crowns of our faith in victory. And when the fasting had weakened us a bit, the Church celebrates the Victorious Cross on Sunday of the Exaltation of the Cross, in order to give us the strength and the hope to continue our spiritual journey to the high moments of Palm Sunday, when the Lord enters the city of Jerusalem (our heart). As we will sing the Hosanna Hymns to the Lord, “let us love one another, that with one mind we may confess” (set aside all of our differences), let us continue the joy of peace of the resurrection of Lazarus. Let’s us all come to church to witness, what the Savior and Lord Jesus Christ endures for our salvation. Let us witness Judas' kiss of portrayal with steadfast fasting and love to one another. Let us witness the disciples' abandonment of Christ with compassion to each other. Let us pray with him in the Garden of Gestemane, His Church, and visit Him in the hospitals, orphanages, and assisting living places. Let us come and receive the healing of His Holy Grace on Holy Wednesday, during the Efhelion Service, celebrating the joy and love of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us witness His holy, but barbarian crucifixion by hanging our sins on His shoulder, on the cross through our confession. Let us witness His burial by burring with him our evil passions and impure thoughts of jealousy, slander and false witnessing, and let us witness His Holy Resurrection from the dead, together with those in the tombs, the entire angelic community in heaven, by feasting upon His Holy Communion. Let us celebrate His good news of man's salvation and deliver the joy and peace of His message to the world. With this in mind and in heart, it is imperative that I must express to you my gratitude and appreciation for your steady attendance and support to our church whose expenses have increased drastically. In anticipation of the Lord’s Holy Resurrection, I praise our Lord and God Jesus Christ for you. It is also my feverish desire to further express, on behalf of Presvytera Norma, our best, spiritual, warmest and heartfelt wishes to all of you for a humble Holy Week and a very happy Easter. Get your bells today and use them every year as a family Holy Saturday tradition. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… EASTER DAY AGAPE (LOVE) SERVICE AND CHILDRENS’ EGGHUNT It is a Vesper Service that takes place around 12:00 pm on Easter Sunday. At this service, the Holy Gospel reading depicts the first appearance of the Risen Lord to His Disciples and it is read in many languages, in the order that the message of the Good News of Christ’s glorious Resurrection to be heard to all the nations of the world. At the end of this service we distribute red eggs again. People attend this service with the Easter candles lit in their hands. In addition, it is a custom to bring the small children to children who were not able to come to church the night before due to the lateness of the hour. The traditional Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by “Mommie and Me” will follow the Agape Service for all of our children. THE AGIASMA APRIL MAY 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 06 THE AGIASMA APRIL MAY 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 06 Ἱερὰ Ἐξομολόγηση: Ἐρωτήματα καὶ Ἀπαντήσεις ΠΡΙΝ ΤΗΝ ΕΞΟΜΟΛΟΓΗΣΗ Τι είναι η Εξομολόγηση; Η Εξομολόγηση είναι ένα από τα βασικά μυστήρια της Εκκλησίας. Μας δίνει τη δυνατότητα νά «συμφιλιωθούμε» με τον Θεό,νά εξετάσουμε την πίστη και τη ζωή μας και νά εξασφαλίσουμε πνευματική υγεία. Είναι πράξη μετανοίας. Και μετάνοια σημαίνει αλλαγή του εαυτού μας, στροφή, μεταμόρφωση. Όταν αμαρτάνουμε, απομακρυνόμαστε από τον Θεό. Όταν όμως μετανοούμε, ομολογούμε τις αμαρτίες μας και ζητάμε συγχώρεση, επιστρέφουμε σ' Αυτόν. Η Εξομολόγηση μας απαλλάσσει από το βάρος της αμαρτίας. Πώς καθιερώθηκε; Μήπως πρόκειται για πρόσφατη επινόηση τών κληρικών;  Το μυστήριο καθιερώθηκε από τόν ίδιο τον Χριστό. Αυτός έδωσε στους Αποστόλους τήν εξουσία νά συγχωρούν αμαρτίες (Ιω. 20,23). Στήν συνέχεια, οι Απόστολοι μετέδωσαν τό χάρισμα αυτό στους επισκόπους και τους πρεσβυτέρους της Εκκλησίας. Είναι απαραίτητη η Εξομολόγηση για όλους; Μόνο ένας αναμάρτητος δέν χρειάζεται Εξομολόγηση. Ο άγιος Ιωάννης ο Θεολόγος γράφει ότι όποιος θεωρεί τον εαυτό του αναμάρτητο βρίσκεται σε πλάνη και μακριά από την αλήθεια (Α' Ιω. 1, 8). Αλλά και ο μόνος άναμάρτητος, ο Χριστός, δέχτηκε τό βάπτισμα της μετανοίας από τον Πρόδρομο και έδειξε την αναγκαιότητα του μυστηρίου. Ποιος μπορεί νά εξομολογεί; Όπως προαναφέραμε, η Εξομολόγηση γίνεται σε έναν πνευματικό. Δηλαδή σε ιερέα ο οποίος έχει επιλεγεί ειδικά γι' αυτό τό έργο. Χρειάζεται βέβαια να επικοινωνήσουμε μαζί του, για να μας ορίσει τον χρόνο και τόν τόπο. Και ο πνευματικός έχει αμαρτίες! Ο πνευματικός δέν συγχωρεί τις αμαρτίες μας με τήν δική του αγιότητα ή δύναμη, αλλά με την χάρη που του δόθηκε από τον Θεό· αυτός μεσολαβεί μόνο. ΚΑΤΑ ΤΗΝ ΕΞΟΜΟΛΟΓΗΣΗ Πού γίνεται η Εξομολόγηση; Συνήθως η Εξομολόγηση γίνεται στον ναό. Μπορεί όμως νά γίνει και σέ κάποιο παρεκκλήσι ή άλλον χώρο. Πώς γίνεται; Καθόμαστε αντικρύζοντας τις εικόνες και μέ τήν προτροπή του πνευματικού εξομολογούμαστε τις αμαρτίες μας. Μπορούμε επίσης νά συμβουλευτούμε τόν πνευματικό γιά κάποιο θέμα που μας απασχολεί. Όταν ολοκληρώσουμε τήν εξομολόγηση, γονατίζουμε και ο πνευματικός, βάζοντας τό πετραχήλι (σύμβολο της ιερατικής λειτουργίας του) πάνω στό κεφάλι μας, ζητά από τόν Θεό τήν άφεση των αμαρτιών μας. Φεύγοντας, ασπαζόμαστε τό πετραχήλι και το χέρι του πνευματικού. Τι πρέπει να πώ στην Εξομολόγηση; Στην Εξομολόγηση εξετάζουμε τα αισθήματα, τις σκέψεις, τα λόγια, τις πράξεις, την συμπεριφορά, τις συνήθειες, τις αξίες, τις προτεραιότητες, τους στόχους, την κατεύθυνση και τον τρόπο της ζωής μας. Δέν περιοριζόμαστε στην προσωπική μας πνευματική ζωή, αλλά συνεξετάζουμε τις οικογενειακές σχέσεις, τις κοινωνικές σχέσεις, την εργασία, ακόμα και την διασκέδασή μας. Και αυτό, επειδή όλη μας η ζωή πρέπει να φωτιστεί από το Άγιο Πνεύμα. Όχι για να καταδικάσουμε τον εαυτό μας, αλλά για να εξασφαλίσουμε τήν πορεία μας προς τον Χριστό. Μπορούμε λοιπόν να θέσουμε στην κρίση του πνευματικού ζητήματα που μας απασχολούν, ώστε νά πάρουμε αποφάσεις και νά κάνουμε επιλογές πού μας προάγουν πνευματικά, αποφεύγοντας ταυτόχρονα άλλες που μπορούν να ζημιώσουν τήν ψυχή μας. Δεν σκότωσα ούτε έκλεψα... τί νά εξομολογηθώ;  Όταν έχουμε τέτοια απορία, αποκαλύπτουμε ότι δεν γνωρίζουμε τή διδασκαλία του Χριστού, επειδή ο Χριστός μάς διδάσκει ότι και οί αμαρτωλοί λογισμοί ακόμα μας απομακρύνουν από τον Θεό. Επίσης, αμαρτάνουμε όχι μόνο όταν πράττουμε κάτι κακό άλλα και όταν δέν εφαρμόζουμε τό καλό. Άραγε, ποιος μπορεί νά ισχυριστεί ότι εκπληρώνει πραγματικά την εντολή της αγάπης και μάλιστα προς τους εχθρούς του; A Stewardship Note: It is all about Our Time, Talent, and Treasure Decades ago many of your grandparents and parents founded our parishes; then they built our churches; and finally they adorned the interior beauty of those churches. Now, it falls to us, to carry on their legacy by strengthening our parishes so that they will remain guiding light of Holy Orthodoxy in our communities, not only for our children and grandchildren but until Christ comes again. Strengthening our parishes means that each one of us must use our time, our talents, and our treasure in thanksgiving to God for all the blessings He gives us each year, each week, each day … for the building up of Christ’s Holy Church. It falls upon all of us to do everything we can in gratitude to God for His countless blessings: to share our time and talent and treasure to make our parishes stronger. I urge each of you to examine your hearts and ask: Do I give worthily of the 168 hours of life God gives me each week back to Him through my time in personal prayer and my participation in Sunday Liturgies? Make every effort to come to Church more often; to bring with you elderly persons; to invite family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers to participate in the beauty of worship in OUR parish. Whatever gifts God has given you – as a singer or a teacher, an accountant or a computer expert, a baker or a landscaper, an electrician or a carpenter, a lawyer or a doctor or a nurse – share your talents for the strengthening of your local church. Lastly, with rising costs of utilities and insurance, health care coverage and everyday expenses, it is essential that each one of us, out of love for our Lord, make sacrificial gifts to His Church that are of proportionate measure. Each of us needs to give to our parishes as much as we are able to ensure their continued, healthy operation. What does a proportional gift of sacrificial love look like? Let’s not use the standards of the world, but the example of the Scripture. Let’s examine the very first gift of sacrificial love that God accepted in the Bible. In Genesis 4, we read that God received the offering of Adam’s younger son Abel – which was the first born of his flock of sheep. God rejected the offering of Cain – what was left over from the harvest of fruits from his farm. Like Abel and so many others in the Scripture after him, we too need to give our first and our best as our offering to the Lord and not from the left overs. Let me suggest – that those of us who work, offer the first hour worth of wage each week (something known only between us and God) in thanksgiving to the Lord for all His blessings – cheerfully, lovingly, and regularly each week. The first of the harvest of our labors, every week – that is our pledge – whether we come to church that week or are on vacation – in gratitude to God Who blesses us every week, and for the benefit of His Church in our parish community. And if you are already doing this – then consider if you can do even more.– if your blessing from Him has been greater. And for those of us who worry about the present economic status, our tomorrow, let us remember the words of God Himself through His prophet: “Put Me to the test, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not open for you the floodgates of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it is overflowing” (Malachi 3:10). All this I have presented might seem a great deal of giving of time and talent and treasure, but we must remember how much our God has already given to us. Besides our life, our talents, and our other blessings, “God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16) … We must never forget that God is the greatest Giver. No matter how much we give back to Him, we cannot out give what He gives to us. And so, now that we have a new bigger church (that all of us wanted), I urge you to open your hearts in gratitude to God for all His blessings as an imitation of the founders, builders, and benefactors before us and give ever more, if not, then at least give, of your time in Church, your talents for the parish, your treasure in the name of the Lord – and to the glory of the God who loves us more than we love ourselves – the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages! THE AGIASMA APRIL MAY 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 06 THE AGIASMA APRIL MAY 2015 VOL. 15, ISSUE 06 P Υπάρχει ένας εύκολος τρόπος εξέτασης του εαυτού μου σύμφωνα με τόν νόμο του Θεού; Υπάρχουν οι Δέκα Εντολές και η ερμηνεία τους κάτω από τό πρίσμα της Καινής Διαθήκης. Τό τελειότερο όμως και ακριβέστερο κριτήριο είναι η εντολή της αγάπης προς τον Θεό και προς τόν συνάνθρωπο. Σύμφωνα μέ τά λόγια του Χριστού, σ' αυτή τήν εντολή περιέχονται όλες οί άλλες εντολές (βλ. Ματθ. 22,40). Δεν μπορούμε, για παράδειγμα, να αγαπάμε τόν Θεό και νά παραβαίνουμε τις εντολές Του. Ούτε γίνεται να αγαπάμε τους ανθρώπους και ταυτόχρονα να απο (συνέχεια την προηγούμενη σελίδα) διαπράττουμε αδικίες σέ βάρος τους. Μάλιστα η γνησιότητα της αγάπης προς τον Θεό αποκαλύπτεται από την αγάπη προς τον συνάνθρωπο (Α' Ιω. 4,20). Έτσι, όταν αδιαφορούμε για τους άλλους ή τους κακομεταχειριζόμαστε, δείχνουμε ότι δεν έχουμε αγάπη προς τον Θεό. Περιφρονούμε την εντολή Του για την αγάπη προς τον συνάνθρωπο και δέν σεβόμαστε τά δημιουργήματα Του. Μου φαίνεται δύσκολο νά μιλήσω για τόσο προσωπικά θέματα. Αισθάνομαι ντροπή. Τί θα σκεφτεί ο πνευματικός; Πρέπει νά βλέπουμε τό εξομολογητήριο σαν ιατρείο, και τον πνευματικό σάν γιατρό. Για εμάς η Εξομολόγηση είναι θέμα ψυχικής -συχνά και σωματικής- υγείας. Για τον πνευματικό πάλι είναι κάτι τό συνηθισμένο. Δεν πρόκειται νά σοκαριστεί από τις δικές μας αμαρτίες. Σίγουρα έχει ακούσει χειρότερες. Εξάλλου, δεν είναι περίεργο η ντροπή, πού μας λείπει την ώρα της αμαρτίας, νά μας κυριεύει τήν ώρα της μετανοίας; Φοβάμαι μήπως ο πνευματικός φανερώσει τις αμαρτίες μου. Ο πνευματικός έχει ιερό καθήκον να τηρεί τό απόρρητο της Εξομολογήσεως, τό οποίο μάλιστα αναγνωρίζεται και από τόν νόμο. Σε περίπτωση παράβασης αυτού του καθήκοντος ελέγχεται από τόν Επίσκοπο του και τήν Εκκλησιαστική Δικαιοσύνη. Όπως αναφέραμε πρωτύτερα, τόν πνευματικό θα πρέπει νά τόν αντιμετωπίζουμε ως θεραπευτή. Έτσι, χρειάζεται νά τόν περιβάλλουμε με ανάλογη εμπιστοσύνη. Γιά τον λόγο αυτόν επιλέγουμε ελεύθερα και με δική μας ευθύνη τον πνευματικό, ώστε νά είναι πρόσωπο μέ πίστη και αρετή και νά έχει τήν καλή μαρτυρία των πιστών. Μάλιστα η παράδοση τής Εκκλησίας μας συνιστά τήν τακτική εξομολόγηση στον ίδιο πνευματικό και τήν αποφυγή της εναλλαγής του. Πώς πρέπει νά λέγονται οι αμαρτίες στον πνευματικό; Αρκεί μία απλή, σαφής και σύντομη αναφορά. Δεν χρειάζονται ούτε λεπτομέρειες (ιδιαίτερα για τά σαρκικά θέματα), ούτε μακροσκελείς εισαγωγές ή δικαιολογίες. Αυτό που σίγουρα χρειάζεται είναι ταπείνωση και συναίσθηση των αμαρτιών μας. Τι μπορεί να μου πει ο πνευματικός; Νά εξηγήσει τή σπουδαιότητα μιας αμαρτίας. Να συμβουλεύσει για τήν αποφυγή της. Νά δώσει απάντηση σε κάποιο ερώτημα που του θέσαμε. ΜΕΤΑ ΤΗΝ ΕΞΟΜΟΛΟΓΗΣΗ Μετά τήν ευχή του πνευματικού έχουν συγχωρεθεί όλες οι αμαρτίες μου; Μήπως κάποιες θα πρέπει νά τις εξομολογηθώ πάλι; Η ευχή του πνευματικού δίνει τήν άφεση όλων των αμαρτιών που έξαγορεύσαμε. Συνεπώς, τυχόν αμφιβολία μας για τό θέμα αυτό δείχνει έλλειψη πίστης στο μυστήριο και στήν δύναμη του Θεού. Αν πάλι δέν αναφέραμε κάτι βασικό σε σχέση με κάποια αμαρτία, χρειάζεται τήν επόμενη φορά νά τό διευκρινίσουμε. Αν ξεχάσω κάποια αμαρτία; Αν κρύψω κάποια από ντροπή; Αν ξεχάσαμε κάτι και εφόσον δεν είναι σοβαρό, μπορούμε νά το αναφέρουμε στην επόμενη εξομολόγηση. Αν όμως παραλείψαμε κάποια αμαρτία εσκεμμένα, τότε δεν πρέπει να θεωρούμε ότι μας δόθηκε άφεση και δεν πρέπει νά κοινωνήσουμε, ακόμη και αν πήραμε την άδεια του πνευματικού. Είναι απαραίτητη η Θεία Κοινωνία μετά την Εξομολόγηση;  Η μετάνοια δεν περιορίζεται στο μυστήριο της Εξομολογήσεως. Η «συμφιλίωση» και η ενωσή μας με τον Θεό δεν ολοκληρώνεται χωρίς τη Θεία Κοινωνία. Αύτη είναι η μυστηριακή ένωση με τον Θεάνθρωπο Χριστό. Το αποκορύφωμα των μυστηρίων. Η Εξομολόγηση μας προετοιμάζει για τη Θεία Κοινωνία. Μπορώ νά κοινωνήσω λοιπόν αφού εξομολογήθηκα;  Μετά τήν εξομολόγηση θα πρέπει νά ζητήσουμε από τον πνευματικό τήν άδεια νά μεταλάβουμε. Αυτός θά ορίσει τον χρόνο, τήν συχνότητα και τον τρόπο της προετοιμασίας μας (νηστεία, προσευχή, συγχώρεση - συμφιλίωση με τους άλλους). Όμως, τί νόημα έχει νά εξομολογούμαι τακτικά, όταν γνωρίζω ότι θά επαναλάβω τις ίδιες αμαρτίες;  Όπως κάποιος που πάσχει από χρόνια ασθένεια δεν παύει νά προσπαθεί για τήν απαλλαγή του, έτσι και εκείνος που επιθυμεί πραγματικά τήν πνευματική υγεία φροντίζει αδιάκοπα νά τήν αποκτήσει. Αυτός είναι ο πνευματικός αγώνας του ανθρώπου· η διά βίου μετάνοια. Το μυστήριο της Εξομολόγησης εξασφαλίζει ότι καμμιά αμαρτία δεν μπορεί νά μας απομακρύνει από τό έλεος του Θεού. Μόνο η έλλειψη μετανοίας. As I visited this year your homes during the Epiphany period, many of you, if not all of you, had so many questions about our Orthodox Tradition and the Bible. Although, in a little time that we had together, I was able with the grace of the Lord to answer, I believe all your questions. Once watching the documentaries on CNN about “Finding Jesus”, I thought it would be a good idea to enrich our church’s Bi-monthly magazine, The Agiasma, for our younger generation with a Questions and Answers page that will refer and relate to the upcoming feasts of our liturgical year, so they may know the truth instead of the propaganda. Although, I believe this may be a very tiny way of learning, it may provoke some to talk openly for a further discussion and so it is my hope that the Holy Spirit may enrich your souls with the love of our God. We will have a different question on every issue. I invite all of you to send me your questions. Hoping that we may be able to publish some of them. Questions and Answers by Fr. Stanley Samuel Harakas KNEELING What is the tradition, or rule, of the Orthodox Church regarding kneeling during the 40-day Easter period? Some clergy say we should stand at the time the “Se Ymnoumen” is being sung due to Easter, and others say that we should kneel as we do each Sunday. Which is correct? Unfortunately I cannot tell you which alternative is “correct.” I am not able to find any rule or regulation on this particular question. However, I think I can tell you why the opinions vary on it. The whole question of kneeling on Sundays has been a subject of debate in our Church over the past few decades. There are several ancient canons (15th of Peter of Alexandria, 20th of the 1st Ecumenical Council and the 90th of the Council in Troulo) which urge the faithful not to kneel on Sundays. However, it is generally understood that the reason for this prohibition is found in the early practice of Christians to kneel in church on all other days of the week, repenting for their sins. In order to turn the focus of their attention from themselves to the Risen Lord whom we particularly worship on the Lord’s Day, the canons prohibit kneeling on repentance kneeling on Sunday. Later, the practice of daily kneeling in prayer as an expression of repentance died out as a popular practice. So, the canon was no longer applicable to that situation. Today’s kneeling on Sunday is not for repentance at all. It is a sign of deep reverence for the Sacrament of our Lord’s Body and Blood. We kneel at the “Se Ymnoumen” because the prayer of the consecration of the bread and wine is being read by the priest at that moment. The kneeling is not a kneeling of repentance, but a kneeling which is acknowledging the great mystery of the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Some priests feel that the Easter season ought to be marked by additional distinctive liturgical observances. The Greek word for resurrection is “Anastasis” which means. Literally, “rise up” or “stand up.” Since the reason given for the prohibition of kneeling in the early canons was the Easter season we ought not to kneel, even at the “Se Ymnoumen.” Other priests disagree, pointing out that the reason for kneeling in the first place-reverence for the Eucharistic sacrament-still remains regardless of the season. They feel that to introduce not kneeling at the “Se Ymnoumen” during the Easter season is contradiction and creates unnecessary confusion. Until the Holy Synod of the Church, or your local bishop, officially gives direction on this matter, the priest in your parish will decide what is to be done there and you should follow his directions on this matter. Σας απευθύνομαι τους θερμούς χαιρετισμούς μας Τα χιόνια τελικά έλιωσαν, η Άνοιξη είναι μαζί μας καθώς είμαστε σχεδόν έτοιμοι να γιορτάσουμε λαμπρά το Άγιο Πάσχα. Ολόκληρο το Εκκλησιαστικό Συμβούλιο και εγώ θα χαρούμε πάρα πολύ να σας δούμε όλους στην εκκλησία τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα, ειδικά την Μεγάλη Παρασκευή και το Μεγάλο Σάββατο πρωϊ και βράδυ, δεδομένου ότι όντως έχει γίνει μια μεγάλη παράδοση να γιορτάζουμε τις ακολουθίες εδώ στην εκκλησία μας πολύ παραδοσιακά, όπως στην πατρίδα μας. Όλοι μας γνωρίζουμε ότι, οι δραστηριότητες στην κοινότητα μας ήταν περιορισμένες τελευταίως λόγω του μακρού χειμώνα. Τώρα που ήλθε η Άνοιξης, οι δραστηριότητες πάλιν αρχίζουν. Γι’ αυτό σας συνιστώ όταν θα εκκλησιαστείτε, κατά τη διάρκεια της Μεγαλοβδομάδος, θα δείτε μιά πολύμορφη εικονογραφία στο βάθος του Ιερού. Είναι η ιερά εικώνα της ΠΛΑΤΥΤΕΡΑΣ, διακοσμημένη με τους αγγέλους, να μας ατενίζει απο ψηλά μέσα στο Ιερόν. Επιπλέον, πάνω απο την Πλατυτέρα θα απολαύσουμε την εικόνα του Άγίου Συνδόνιου, του Κυρίου μας. Μιά άλλη δραστηριότητα, την οποία καλώ όλους να συμμετάσχουν είναι το Φεστιβάλ της κοινότητάς μας, που θα πραγματοποιηθεί από τις 21 Μαΐου έως 25 Μαΐου. Αυτή είναι η εκδήλωσης, που ο κάθ’ ένας μας πρέπει να συμμετέχει και να υποστηρίξει με όλη την καρδιά, να γίνουμε ένα χωριό. Η πρόοδος και η επιτυχία του φεστιβάλ φυσικά υποδηλώνει το λαμπρό μέλλον των παιδιών μας. Περαιτέρω, όπως αναφέραμε προκαιρών, η ετήσια λαχειφόρος θα κληρωθεί στην γιορτή της Αγίας Μαρκέλλας, 22 Ιουλίου. Σύντομα κάθε υποστηρικτής και ενορίτης της Αγίας Μαρκέλλας θα λάβει 4 λαχεία γαι την προσωπική σας αγορά/πώληση. Πιστεύω ότι όλοι σας θα την υποστηρίξετε. President's Message Presidents Message Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Markella Church. Greetings to all of you! The snow looks like that is finally gone and spring is here as we are about to celebrate Easter. The Parish Council and I would be exceedingly happy to see you all attending the church services during Holy Week in our new church, especially on Holy Friday and Holy Saturday night, as it has become a great tradition to celebrate the services very traditionally as if we are back home in our home land. As everyone knows due to the long winter that we had the past two months the activities at our community were limited. Now that spring has sprang, the activities will begin again. I am sure that when many of you will come to church during Holy Week you will see the Iconography displayed in the Altar. The holy icon of the Platytera will be fitted high upon the altar wall, decorated with angels. Over the top portion of the wall there will be the Holy Mandylion icon of our Lord, The Holy Shroud. Details for the rest of the iconography for the church will be conveyed to all of you in a letter in the near future. Another activity, which I invite all of you to participate it is our community’s festival that will take place from May 21, to May 25, on Memorial Day weekend as always. This is the event that each and every one should take stock to participate and support; for all of us to become a village, and show off of what we are made of. Let us all be part of it for a bright future of our children. Further, as we have mentioned previously, we will have the drawing of our Grand Raffle on the feast of St. Markella, on July 22. Soon each supporter and parishioner of St. Markella will receive 4 raffle tickets by mail to purchase/sell. I believe in my heart that all of you will be supportive of the Grand Raffle that futures so many nice and pricy gifts, among them a Mercedes car. Answer: With baptism, we are freed from sin, and we rise alive in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom. 6). But yet, we find ourselves sinning again after our baptism. Confession or Repentance is the sacrament where the sins we commit after our baptism, and confess with our spiritual father, and truly repent, are forgiven by our Lord, and reconciled with God. We learn from St. John the Theologian: “If we confess our sins, He (Christ) is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I Jn 1:9). Question #2: What Is The Basis Of The Sacrament Of Confession? Answer: Christ Himself established this mystery. He proved that He, as God the Son, had the power both to forgive sins and to heal physical sickness, when He said to the paralytic, “My son, your sins are forgiven you,” and then raised him from his bed of paralysis (Mark 2). Before He ascended into Heaven, He gave His apostles the authority to forgive sins: “Receive the Holy Spirit; if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:22-23). The apostles, in turn, gave that authority to the bishops of Christ's Church; and they, to the priests – unto this very day. Question #3: How Should I Understand This Sacrament? Answer: Just like we understand the ministry of Jesus: as a ministry of healing. Sin is a spiritual poison that will infect our soul and destroy us, if it is not expelled; just like poison in our stomach would kill us, if we did not vomit it out. By confessing, by calling out, to the Lord, Church, ourselves, and even to the devil, that we have sinned and we are truly sorry, we expel the poison that is inside us. St. John of the Ladder writes, “Nothing gives demons more power against us than un-confessed sins in our heart upon which they feed.” Scriptural “heroes” like the publican and the prodigal, prove the necessity of confession and the grace of God's forgiveness that follows. Question #4: But Why Must I Go To A Priest for Confession; Can't I Just Confess Direct To God? Answer: The first Christians confessed their sins publicly, out loud before everyone in the Church, because we sin against both God and one another; and they received the forgiveness -- the absolution -- from the bishop (priest) as directed by our Lord. Saint James confirms this, saying: “Confess your sins to one another” (Jam. 5:10). Because people unfortunately began to discuss one another's sins, the Church prescribed that the priest (bishop) would not only individually offer the forgiveness, but would also individually hear the penitent's confession with the promise of confidentiality. Just like we cannot be healed by our doctor unless we tell him where the pain is, we cannot be healed of our sins unless we tell them in the presence of our spiritual father. Question #5: What Is Required For A Good Confession? Answer:  First we must examine our conscience, and recognize that we have sins, and what they are. Sometimes that in itself is hard; when we are living in the darkness of sin, it is hard to recognize. Seeing our sins, we must feel sorrow for them -- like the Prodigal Son, we are sad to be separated from our Father. Then, we turn ourselves around, and come home to Him – this is metanoia, repentance. And then, like the Prodigal, we confess our sins: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son” (Luke 15). When we do this, the Lord will receive us and restore our relationship as a son or daughter and give us His kingdom of Heaven. Question #6: How Often Should I Go To Confession? Answer: The more often, the better. According to Saint John of the Ladder, just as wounds shown to a doctor do not get worse, so when sins are confessed, they do not increase. Certainly going to confession once a year, before Pascha, is the minimum. But more frequent contact in confession with one's spiritual father also helps us to more precisely examine our conscience -- and to deter us from repeating our sins.
