2 Δεκαετία ‘90: Νέα ειδικά εφέ, ανεξάρτητες ταινίες και ταινίες κινουμένων σχεδίων Στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1990 είδαν εμπορική ανάπτυξη ταινίες του ανεξάρτητου κινηματογράφου στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Αν και ο κινηματογράφος όλο και περισσότερο κυριαρχείται από ειδικά εφέ (κινηματογραφικές ταινίες όπως Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Jurassic Park (1993) και ο Τιτανικός (1997), ανεξάρτητες ταινίες όπως το Sex, Lies and videotapes (1989) του Στίβεν Σόντερμπεργκ και το Reservoir Dogs (1992) του Κουέντιν Ταραντίνο είχαν σημαντική εμπορική επιτυχία τόσο στον κινηματογράφο όσο και σε βίντεο στο σπίτι. Μερικές από αυτές είναι: Spy Kids 3D: Game Over (2003), Aliens of the Deep IMAX (2005), και Οι περιπέτειες του Sharkboy και Lavagirl σε 3-D (2005). Η 3D ταινία Avatar του Τζέιμς Κάμερον έγινε η υψηλότερη ταινία συνολικής είσπραξης όλων των εποχών και οι 3D ταινίες έχουν αποκτήσει αυξανόμενη δημοτικότητα.
